I'm not thinking of going too fast, about 20mph is my max and if I am loaded down, maybe 12mph. Just don't want it flipping over.

Lol.... I can't wait to see the responses your about to get!!!

I honestly have no idea. I'm sure when the kayak manafactures designed your kayak, they never took in mind the stress of being pulled behind a boat though.

Ya know, I was thinking more along the lines of towing it empty but riding in it while being pulled with a ski rope that you can let go of would probably be a blast.

I guess there is nothing left to do but carry out the experiment.

Lol!!!! Don't forget the video. Oh and please make sure you can let go of the rope.
If not, it would be one of the largest crank baits
a fish has ever seen. Lol!!!!!!

Make sure you video tape it. You probably just have fun but.....If something does go wrong you might get some money out of the video to cover hospital or funeral bills.

I say 65 MPH would be a good start then crank it down from there. Be a good idea to go ahead and wear a PFD though.

I can go 66 !

just kidding

but mess around some with weight distrubution and tow rope locations while you're doing your learning

no real reason why you can go Ski Speeds except for the crashes

Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

You should tow a skier behind the towed kayak.

I could barely stand up in my scrambler in not moving in still water...

I don't think I would. After learning just how thin (paper thin), these yaks are at the scuppers, I could see the stresses of that kind of towing popping it wide open. Still it's your kayak. Let us know how it turns out.

Does that thing have to have a TX number as a motorboat?

edit: never mind, found the answer and it is "yes".

Trout Bum, actually, we were closer to 4.7mph. 3.5 is just idle. And, yes, it is a powered watercraft and does have TX hull numbers just like to big boys do...wide open is about 12-13mph and gets the Mokai up on plane, like a larger boat does. With a yak in tow, I don't know. Get prepared to get dunked would be my guess.

A longer rope might have worked better and I'm thinking about a harness attached to the two back lift handles. It would pull straighter and we might be able to make 6-7 mph. Still, we were way faster than Bum could paddle on his own and we logged almost 7 miles that day, according to the GPS travel data.

So there... coach

After watching one of the videos about powered surf boards, I'd like to ask Mokai to offer a different model, one closer to a SOT kayak and the same power plant/jet drive. Easier to get inside, stand, cast from, etc... more of a fishing platform and not so much of a cold water exploration craft. A bit longer, maybe 13.5ft or 14ft to paddle better when not underway with the jet drive and longer would add some more space to strap a crate and carry stuff onboard. Not that I don't love the current Mokai, there are always ideas to improve a craft when you have a specific use model in mind. Think about a cross between a Hobie Revolution or the larger Pro Angler, with the jet drive added... Frickin' AWESOME!!

D. Cole-how is your yak powered? Is it a trolling motor or something. Just wondering.

I know where you can get one and there was one for sale in Houston...it had the older style 5hp Honda engine, but was still a great craft. $2500

Safe for who/what?

I'd say that pulling at 15 or 20 MPH would be safe for the rider. It would probably be pretty fun too.

I'd say that just pulling an empty boat wouldn't be any problem, but it might roll on you. You better have good handles to tie to though.

The thing you have to watch out for when towing a kayak behind a PB is how fast you stop. Throttle back on a PB and the kayak will want to run over the PB as it has much less drag. Kabonk!! And yes that is personal experience talking.

RealBigReel
I don't go too fast but I go pretty far.

I was thinking empty at about 16 mph. Maybe a little weight in the back.
Guess I need to take my time slowing down. smile

When you slow down, just turn a little.

If 16mph works, then I woudl bump it up to 18. Keep doing this until something goes wrong. That will tell you how fast you can pull a kayak.
