Trex,

In addition to the great advice above, you may find this Youtube video informative on hooking bass:

I'm sure many of us would like to show you in person, but many live too far from ya. Your next best bet to seeing the technique "live" is via online videos! I hope this one helps a little.

Ok so to summarize what i have learned in this thread:

1. Dont be jumpy, not ever bump is a fishbite
2. Allow a lil slack in the line
3. Hard bumps and pulls mean i should reel and snap.

Yes...all in one fluid motion. Don't panic and reel the slack up too fast. Just calmly reel up the slack and right before you put tension on the line snap the rod back.

Deep six the circle hooks. They will cause you nothing but grief. When you have learned to set the hook properly you will not injure many fish.

im guessing most people think that circle hooks are a bad idea since noone else has recomended them.

And also regarding when i should set the hook, am i supposed to snap ONLY when i see the line being pulled away?

Hook type is going to depend on what bait you are using. Generally if you are fishing with soft plastic worms, you will want a regular offset hook, circle hooks in my experience are more suited for live baits.

Also, when I was just starting out, and I'm still new to the sport, I would set hooks on lots of weeds and rocks. If you are fishing with something like a crank bait with a steady retrieve, even a snag can feel like a hit.

Just don't get discouraged, and practice.

Exactly. Lol thats whts happenig to me everytime i go fishing... I always end up catching weeds. I know that tap taps are from fish but i dont know if it would be advisable to set the hook on those.
