I looked at the Phoenix pretty close, my local dealer carries them and if I were you, I would go with the Legend. I think Phoenix is a fine boat but out here in West Texas where the wind blows a lot I need a good rough water boat. I have a 396 Charger now and am thinking about a 596 Charger or a Legend, just to get a little more length. But like others have said, take a test drive, it's your boat and it's the only way to be sure YOU pick the right boat for you needs.

Well in Oct of 09 I went to the Toyota bass classic specifically to look at and drive the Phoenix (Drove from San Antonio to Conroe). I was very interested in thier boats (since they purchased the old bumble bee plant and I loved my bumble bee), as I had reasearched Phoenix heavily on Line. I realized they built a new mold with the Phoenix but was hoping it would perform like my bee.

That said I get to the TTBC and set up a test drive in a Phoenix 721proxp. I will tell you the good and the bad:

1. First the good - The boat handles rough water OK and was a stable and good fishing platform. I like the layout of the storage and amount of storage on the boat. But my impression stops there.
2. Now for the bad - the boat I ran had a 250 HP yami (I wanted a Yami engine any way) and I felt it was a led sled. I ran this boat hard for about 30-40 mins in all kind of water. The wind was blowing so I got to test it in 1.5-2' chop which it handled OK and we took alot of spray, Got back by the dam where it was calm and opened it up and could not get over 65 MPH out of it empty with only 1/2 tank of gas and 2 guys, no tackle. Was not nimble at all in the turns and would not bite to turn at high speeds, would actually slide in the hard turns. I was not impressed with the way the boat performed.

I thought it was a good fishing plat form, as I dropped the TM in the windy water and turned the boat every direction against the wind to see how stable it was, but I did not like the running performance.

I get back from the test run thank the dealer for taking me out and continue going through the show.

Bout an hour later I run by the Legend booth, start talking to Randy Qualls and he gives me the 411 on every aspect of his boat from bow to stern (Gary with phoenix did not take the time to do this - he merely reffered me to the dealer) then he begs me to take a test ride. At this point I had PHoenix on my mind and was considering one even though I did not like the performance that much, but I liked the layout. After some discussion with Randy he got me to take a Test drive in an Alpha 211 the same day.

I put the Alpha through the same tests I did the Phoenix, and there was not comparison - The Legend was 8-9 mph faster, (Peaked the Legend out empty at 74 with a 250 yami) handled the rough water better - we came back from the dam at about 60-62 mph in a 1.5' chop and you would not know it high and dry with no spray, the boat will turn on a dime, and will not slide in turns at high speeds, The storage layout is great and the fit and finish were better than the Phoenix.

The only down side to the Legend, was when I droped the trolling motor in the wind and you get the boat sideways where the waves are hitting the port or starboard side it would rock a little more than the Phoenix, but not enought to make you lose balance or not be able to fish but rocked a little more than the Phoenix.

Couple that with the fact that Randy Qualls (owner of Legend) took my name and cell phone number and even called me 3 weeks later to ask how I liked the boat and what my thoughts were after running the other brands at the show. He did not pressure me to buy but just let me know to call him should I want to buy and he would take care of me. Great people at Legend - I met all of them when I drove to Arkanasa to pick up my Legend and now have an exteded boat family. The total experience with Legend was great.

Hope that lengthy explanation provides some insight - I went with the Legend and have been glad I did. I can always get a person on the phone at the plant and they work with you to get your boat exactly like you want it if you order a new one. I had my ruler blow out and was able to get it replaced in 2 days.

I would strongly suggest you drive them both yourself to determine which you like better, which is what I did, but I promise you would be happy with the Legend. If you are ever in South Texas and want to go for a ride - PM me here and I will take you out.

This does not at all describe the characteristics of this boat, there was either a prop problem engine height problem or something going on here..
Not sure if you knew what to expect out of the phoenix performance wise but this is definitely not it.. my boat runs 74-75 tourney loaded all day, best top speed " on a lake" is 78.6 mph.. this is the norm for a 721 with a 250 hp.. the boat handles great and is one of the main features of the hull, turns sharp bites and holds without wanting to bow hook at all. the rough water ride is exceptional, even with the seat forward design. The hull has a sharp V which cuts the waves without the bone jarring slams..
No boat is perfect for everyone, mine fits my style as im sure you folks that run legend it fits yours.
But if someone is comparing these 2 boats they should at least get FACTS about them...

Mr. DerekG - These are facts the day I drove the boat, I drove both boats on the same day and darn near took the exact same path with both, put both through the same tests. Not sure what the prop was, or prop distance below the pad, or the motor height, but don't you think that should be worked out before test runs are given. I did not even ask, as I assumed they set up the boat for maximum performance. These were facts as the day I drove. Like I said, phoenix has good qualities and was actually the boat I wanted to buy, but wanted to drive it first. I had no interest in the Legend till I sat in one and drove it.

I strongly encourage anyone to drive the boat they want to buy. Don't accept a DEMO ride from another driver while you sit in the passenger seat - get behind the wheel and drive that puppy and put it to the test. Thats what I did and the boat made my decision for me. Hell I drove over 250 miles just to test drive boats, and it was a great decision.

Totally agreed, I wouldn't know why any dealer would want to mis- represent their product like that. to me something clearly was not right with the set- up.. I have a hydraulic jackplate and i can run to speeds 70+ with alot of different prop to pad heights.
I definitely would not disagree that that was the experience you had, but that it is just not the norm for myself and the 20- 30 phoenix owners i have spoken to.
Before anyone goes to test drive any boat, know before hand what kind of performance it should have, that way if something doesnt seem right you can ask why? or set up another demo
Both boats are excellent products and would make anyone happy!

I think this is a good time to throw in another comment. One day as I was passing through the shop they had "Sam's" boat in there. I asked what they were doing to it. It was a 721 with a 250 Pro XS. I was told that Dennis' boat, same model and same motor could run off and hide from Sam's boat. What gives? Turns out the difference in this case was different plates. I think one had an 8" and one had a 10". Point is that sometimes these boats are not optimally rigged.
I don't doubt your experience South Texas Legend, but I don't believe it was representative of optimum 721 performance. Not all techs are capable of dialing these high performance rigs the first time. There are so many variables which affect each model boat differently.

I would look at all brands, make the best decision that you can and not worry bout what or who likes which brand. My Legend looks good but that's it, got freaking Mercury that might be the biggest terd ever. The engine is more important than the glass. Wish I was back in a Yamaha. Mercury has some major issues as they all do from time to time but mine is a flat out terd. Until it is fixed which seems impossible I might get back on the Merc kick. But if I had my choice go Legend/SHO/lowrance/Minnkota/millerlight.

Phoenix now has a 921 that is longer and wider than the 721. This might be a better test against the Alpha 211.
