Looking at buying a 5x10 ft. utility trailer, and then putting a bar across it at both ends, kind of like a ladder rack to put my kayak on. Found a trailer place that adds the bars on. Bars are removable. Also want to be able to put my ATV on occasionally as well, so wanting to put the 'crossbars' about 56" high for kayak to clear ATV. (I have an extra seat on ATV, and it sticks up higher.) I can then carry bikes, ATV, and kayak over ATV. Was thinking of using swim noodles on bars under kayak. Any suggestions on this? Kayak is Hobie Oasis, so heavy to load on my SUV, think this will help a lot. It's 14.5 ft. long. Will the bars spaced about 9ft. apart be ok? Sorry so long. I appreciate any feedback.

I have a 5x10 trailer fixed like that that works great. I would consider building the removable bars with a short extension going up so that they can be installed upside down. This would allow the crossbar to be high for clearing a load on the trailer or low for ease of loading and to lower your yak when not carrying anything else. Shouldn't cost much extra.
Good luck, Phill

Carver, GREAT info. Was trying to wrap my brain around all things I would need, and this is a great one. Any other suggestions are appreciated. You guys here know a LOT more than me bout kayaking and needs, and that's why I'm here. Looking forward to fun and fishing with mine.

I have a 5x9 utility trailer w/ a 4'foldable gate. Here's a pic. I have since added another set of unistruts for the back end so I can use the gate. I also modified the unistruts so the yaks can be carried at any height. ![](http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g22/rnsklc/march%203%202010%20east%20of%20the%20barricades%20mcfaddin%20sign/march32010eastofthebarricades004.jpg)

Just got off phone with trailer guy. Going to be similar to you guy's trailers. It will have two sets of poles so I can carry it high, or low, if no ATV. With the two sets of posts, it will still fit fairly tight whichever poles I use, and both will have pins in posts. I didn't need a gate/ramp. All for around $1100 for new trailer. And nice thing is that I will be able to carry ATV, bikes, kayak, and more if needed. I appreciate you guys input.

Got new trailer Thursday and went to Austin Friday. Works great. With yak dead center, you can put it closer to the tow vehicle and it never gets close to vehicle since vehicle turns around point of yak. Also has extra poles to mount yak up higher if I want to carry my ATV also. I suggest you think of any options before hand and anything else you might want to carry. We have bikes that we like to take with us. I didn't think of the cross bars and they are too close to put bikes in between. Next, this one will get a toolbox on floor in front of trailer. Going to Fla. in July, so we can put a lot of things in toolbox. Also, if you get a trailer for your yak, there's not much tongue weight and some receivers don't fit real tight in the hitch and will make a LOT of noise. You might have to read online to get a 'fix' for this or put some extra weight on the trailer's front. ![](http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa317/greggtex/Kayaking/trailer2.jpg) ![](http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa317/greggtex/Kayaking/trailer.jpg)

Also, just good info:friend of mine is a Farmers Agent in Denton/Frisco area, or anywhere N. Texas actually. He was able to insure the trailer ($1100) and kayak ($2300) for $100 for entire year. This does include some liablility and possibly medical payments as well. In case of theft or something, great price for entire year.

Looking at the pictures above got me thinking. I don't see any plates on either of the trailers (they may be there and just not a good angle to see them). I have looked on craigs list for trailers and notice many of the small ones do not appear to be registered. My question is if they are not registered, have you ever gotten a ticket?

Since it's new, paper plates given to us, just not on yet. Will get regular plates after we go register trailer. All trailers have to be registered to be used on public roads. Just make sure you get a bill of sale if buy used.

Registering these trailers, without serial numbers, weighing less than 3500 pounds, is not a problem. Call it a home built trailer and the county will issue tags, etc. The tags are issued to a "Non-Titled Vehicle". I paid sales tax to the county, since I bought the trailer from an individual (got a bill of sale). For a $600 trailer, it cost me $47.85 to get tags and be legal.
