Brew: Rahr & Sons Bucking Bock

Brewed by: Rahr & Sons Brewing Company | Fort Worth, Texas USA

Style: American Maibock / Helles Bock

Glassware: Best served in a flute, pilsner glass, or a mug.

Personal Notes: Oh sweet day in May!! This is one AWESOME bock! An awesome session brew to be enjoyed over and over and over!! This brew pours up a rich almost caramel-y body and sports and amazing frothy head. The scents are absolutely intoxicating! Sweet toasted malts mixed in with some caramel and subtle hints of baked apples. The flavors in this brew are stunning to say the least! Loads of malts and an exceptionally balanced sweet/bitter bite with a solid finish that entices you to your next savoring. Again this is an exceptional brew to be enjoyed with some fish/seafood meals or all by itself! Excellent work Fritz!

Glad you enjoyed it! Like I said, one of my favorite beers, from one of my favorite breweries. Did you have it on bottle, or tap, and which Flying Saucer location were you at?

All three are great, and vastly different.

The Reverend is one of the beers that got me into "craft beer" in the first place, and still one of my Favorite American Quads.

Salvation is like Avery's version of Duvel.

Mephistopheles? One of my favorite Imperial Stouts, and depending on the vintage, it's anywhere from 14% to 17%.

Which, is about 4 beers in one 12oz bottle.

If you drink all three of those, you'll be having about the alcoholic equivalent of 12 beers...But since you're drinking a lot less liquid ,you'll probably have it in a shorter period of time, and it'll hit you a hell of a lot harder.

I recommend you review them one beer per night, unless you're hoping for a major hangover tomorrow lol.

What year is that Mephistopheles Stout? If you look on the bottom left of the label, it'll tell you what year it was bottled in. On the other side of the "Avery" Banner, it'll tell you the ABV.

The last couple years have been even higher 15.8-16%+ then some of the older batches, but also even better. It'll taste VERY strong if it's fresh, not quite as much so but more complex if it's aged a bit.

sorry, missed the first part about the Czar. I was at flying saucer in sundance square. I am honestly not sure if it was bottle or tap. it wasn't on the menu. I asked the waitress if they carried it, she said yes. but never said which one. it came in a glass though? lol

Nice, that's the most recent batch then. I've only had that batch myself once so far, it's really good, and definitely still "hot". Sort of a craft beer term for a beer that's huge in alcohol and could use a little aging.

But I love a bit of burn, so I loved it lol. Plus, the flavor is amazing.

The 2009 was even higher ABV, it was 16.7% I think.

I definitely think you'll enjoy it! But, if you've already had Salvation and Reverend...if I was you, I'd wait till tomorrow, and drink it very slowly. The more it warms up, the deeper and better the flavor gets.

Probably tap then, otherwise they usually bring you the bottle and the glass. I love that beer, especially on tap!

Mephistopheles definitely gets better with age.

And that depends. If by most beer you mean light lagers then no, its not like most beers hehe.

Good beer is just like wine once you get to a certain ABV. When you reach 7 or 8%, the alcohol is strong enough to keep the beer from "spoiling", and allows the beer to mature and develop more complex flavors.

Basically, think of good scotch and whiskey. The older it is, the more they're going to charge you for it.

Beer develops the same way, though a year or three is usually enough for the beer to really mature.

Keep in mind, a 5% beer isn't going to age well cause it just doesn't have the alcohol to withstand aging.

But a 15% Imperial Stout? You better believe that's gonna age just fine! Generally, a year or two, or even four, will really smooth down the overwhelming alcohol flavor. A 15% beer that's four years old will be much smoother tasting then a very fresh one, with much less burn. The flavors you'll taste will also be a lot stronger and more fully developed in the 15% beer. Chocolate and coffee tastes are likely to increase, while citrus and hoppy, bitter tastes are likely to decrease.

But don't worry, that 2010 Mephistopheles will drink juuuust fine. I just recommend waiting till tomorrow to avoid hang over, and if it's the first beer you have, you'll taste it completely that much more.

Brew: Saint Arnold Summer Pils

Brewed by: Saint Arnold Brewing Co.; Houston, Texas USA

Style: American Pilsner

Glassware: Best served in a mug or pilsner glass.

Personal Notes: This was a fairly good pilsner. Pours up a very clear, light yellow/amber body with a minimal fizzy head. Scents and flavors of malts and hops entice the senses. Just the right bitter kick on this smooth and easy drinking brew. Goes good with a grilled chicken or spicy fish meal! Makes for a good session brew on a hot summer day.
