My thought is the boat doesn't make a fisherman or fisher woman.. I do however agree that boat prices have kinda gone out of sight... But then again I'm not Mr. Perry *grin*

But then again I'm not Mr. Perry *grin* You are right in that gear and boats will not make the fisherman. It was not long ago I was fishing out of an old beat up Stratos. I'd go back to it in a minute as long as it kept me on the water.

Been there, done all that. These days, it's a BusterBoat and a trolling motor. Not impressive but fun.

There is always something nicer out there. I have a 1972 'Cuda, 2009 modified Wrangler, and am getting back into bass fishing. I will never have the "nicest" of anything, but will have enough to keep me entertained/content!
Starting off with just a 14' Jon boat, I'll work up to a ~17' Tracker and probably be pretty happy with that. Jeep would be paid off first, and it would have to be towable with my Jeep to keep from "needing" another vehicle. I have no desire to realistically own a $50,000 "fun fishing" bass boat. Too many other things I can do with that money, a few thousand dollar Tracker will hold myself and my rods just fine. If I was going every weekend and in competition, that'd be another story.

Kayak angling changed my life. It's extremely affordable, great exercise, and in terms of averages, I catch just as many fish as the average amateur power boat angler.
Paddling out into the quiet water on a calm summer morning with our Texas sun peeping over the horizon: the closest I have ever felt to God.
I wouldn't buy a bass boat if I won the lottery.

I would go even further and not buy a boat just a couple of years old, go even older. I have a pretty old boat that has been taken care of and looks like new. because I saved so much on the boat i have been able to splurge on electronics, got my hds 7 a few months ago and just ordered my hds 8. i find that people selling boats only a few years old think they are still worth what they paid for them. blows my mind. they are like cars, the depreciate! This right here is what blows my mind sometimes. I've looked around at used boats and it seems since the prices of newer ones have gone up the prices of used ones has as well. You see people all the time selling 10-12 year old boats for close to $20,000. knowing that they didnt pay much more than that when it was brand new.

I fish out of my kayak with the fish finder I installed myself and with my kayak and all my gear with tackle I maybe have 2k invested into it. Other then not being able to cover from one end of the lake to the other like a power boat can, I still catch a ton of fish and can get into some really stumpy areas alot of boats can't even try to get into. Plus it fits on top of my 4 cylinder Kia that gets great gas mileage and all it takes is some enrgy for me to move its a pretty sweet deal overall. One thing I have learned in my 3 years of kayak fishinf is "It's not that bad getting skunked in a $1500 kayak compared to a 20k + upkeep bass boat" that always makes my fellow kayakers and me smile all the time when we say that.

I can't believe how much it costs to go fishing now and the cost of keeping up with everyone else. I have a buddy who just spent $7900 on graphs and one power pole. Gas is $4 a gallon. I have an 04 ranger with good graphs but if i plan to keep up with everyone else I have to update electronics and install power pole. That is ridiculous money. The power poles are great and they help tremendously in the wind. They are definitely an advantage. The electronics just go without saying. The technology on the new ones compared to my 10in. 104c is just stupid. I can't see how everyone can afford all of this.
Then you have new boat prices getting to $70,000, seriously, give me a break. Some of you guys must have great jobs. There has to be a cap when it comes to boats. Will they get to $100,000, I can't see that but it is trending towards it quickly. What do you guys think? I agree with you on the prices, but would advise you to not try and keep up with the jones or worry about what other people are buying - who cares. I dont have a ton of debt and have a new boat,(I do owe money on my boat) but I did not buy my new boat until my truck was paid for. Once the truck was paid for I started looking for my new boat. I would not worry about what other people have, it should not be about keeping up with others, but tyring to catch more fish. I say this because I want a HB 998si on the front of my boat, but I am not willing to spend the money right now to get one. The only reason I want one is I know the effectiveness of good electronics. I have an 1197 on my dash, and this unit has helped me locate more and bigger populations of fish. I wish I had a unit up front with the same capability. Its my belief that I will continue to locate and find more places to fish if I have a nicer unit on the front of my boat - which is where I spend more time anyway. The point I am making is - I only spend big money when I see an advantage on the water to do so. When I get enough money I plan to buy one cash, but I have to save money now. The same philososophy applies to my rods, reels, gear and tacle. I have bought numberous different rods and reels, and have found some really good bargain brands that meet my requirements. I have found many rods in the 50-100 dollar range that are great and no need to buy a $250 rod - It will not help me catch more fish. I have learned what I want to look for in a good rod. Same for reels - Most expensive reel I own is 1 shimano Curado, all the others have been reels I bought on clearance or ones I did some research on and found were really great reels. Most of my reels cost between $25-100. No one $200 reel in my boat - Why I have never lost a fish due to reel malfunction. The other point I am making here is yes prices are rising, but you do not have to buy top of the line everything. Be patient and diligent as there are items you need and use for much cheaper prices - Just like everything else. Now if the price of gas goes to $5 a gallon I may become a yak fisherman - Just wish they would let yaks in major tournaments.

I never have and never will finance a boat, i buy what i can afford. There are lots of good deals on used well kept up with boats out there.
You don't have to have a giant 21'+ boat to catch fish. Sure they are nice but it's not a necessity.
I actually miss my 1984 Skeeter Starfire 150 sometimes. Me and my dad one hundreds of tourneys out of that boat over the years we got rid of it in 94, and got bigger and bigger boats.
Sure I love my xb2003, but if money got tight i'd sell it and go find a starfire 150 or 175 in a heartbeat, just have to find one that wasn't kept outside so the transoms solid.
I know i caught more fish out of that boat growing up than any other we ever owned. Big boats are nicer but you don't need them.
Small boats are nice when you can fit them in the garage, don't need separate storage, take less gas to pull tot he lake, less gas to run etc,etc..

My 12' jon coast me 1000 bucks and I can tow it behind a car. I was excited just to add a deck and a trolling motor to the front. Even if I were to go all out I'd probably just get a bigger all welded jon and a truck that could tow it. If I were forced to spend 100k on fishing I'd look for property on a lake or river and still fish from a jon boat.

Not everyone lives on plastic or has everything financed. Don't paint with too broad a brush. Lots of grown folks on this forum that have the priorities in order and still have nice things.
