Caught a giant yesterday(40+lbs) anf filet it up. Does it all tast the same. I noticed some meat was more fatty than the rest.

Most on here let the bigguns go to catch another day. That's how they get big!!

Depends on what kind of catfish. If its a yellow cat it will prolly be pretty good, if its a big blue..... well, hope you like the taste of mud. Its always best to let them big blues live to fight on another line someday, the little ones are tasty though IMO.

I thing the big ones aren't near as good as the ones that weigh 1 1/2 to 5 pounds range. You will notice a real fishy tast to it.

it's that fat in the meat.

For me the meat on the large cats are slightly tougher so I prefer eating the smaller more tender ones.(blues) IMO

I've never tried a big yellow so I can't comment on those.

Trim off all the discolored meat cut each side of the line down the middle and throw that strip away, slice it thin, 3/8-1/2" thick and it will be ok, congradulations on a nice fish, what lake did you catch it in?

The big ones taste muddy to me. I prefer the 2 to 5lbers.

big ones taste just fine ... blues or yellas either one ... like has been mentioned, trim off "ALL" the fat & red meat cuz that is where the bad taste comes from ... i like fish cuz it tastes like fish

BTW all 40'lbers weighed 5# at one time ... ain't ya glad somebody didn't catch & eat that'un at 5#

LOL! That's kinda my outlook on it. The whole "that's how they get big" doesn't make much since. Your letting a big one go that's already big lol its the 5#ers that need to "get big" but I agree the 1-5 or 10 max taste the best but the 10+ are fine to me. All my legal cats are "box fish"

Correct me if I am wrong, but the surveys I have seen show there are considerably more 5 lb fish in your local lake than there are 30+ lb fish. So by common sense if you want your kids and grandkids to have a good chance of catching big fish which should you let grow? If it's legal it's legal but with the growing popularity of catfishing a little conservation will hopefully go a long way. JMHO

it's a wonderful thing called freedom of choice ... JMHO i would much rather try to grow up more big ones than eat all the little ones & not fuss & fight over the "so called few big ones" ... we don't hafta treat the big ones like they are some national treasure that needs to be protected at all costs ... it is a very renewable resource FOR OUR KIDS & GRANDKIDS

after all what size does a catfish need to get before man is his only predator? ... 5 lbs? ... 10 lbs?
