When I was a kid used close hangers and electrical tape to make jigging poles. Form the eyes by taking a 4 inch piece clothes hanger and shaping it in a U form. Bend the ends down and tape the guides on the cane pole to make your eyes. For the reel take a 1 foot piece of clothes hanger wire and shape it in a long then oblong shape. Tape at the end of the pole and you have a place to hold your line. 10lb braid should be about perfect for crappie fishing. We use this set up to slay crappies at Tawakoni back in the early 80's.

That sounds cool I wonder if TX parks and wildlife Would still call that a Cain pole or a rod and reel? I know where there are some big crappie and pulled one out yesterday that missed the lake record by ounces but would have took The Cain pole record.

We just tied line down near the butt end then ran it up with an occasional wrap every 18-24 in. Then tied it at the tip. The tag end would be about 2-4 ft longer than the pole. It was great for flipping. My dad would jig with one (we called it stump knocking). When jigging the tag end would only be 3-4 ft long max. That way he could just lift it up and drop it right next to a stump or in a downed tree. Worked great for bream. And it was an impressive explosion when a big bream hit that short line.

Would need to know gps cords. for this spot in order to adequately address this question. ![grin grin](/forums/images/graemlins/default/grin.gif)

Been using them for perch this year. They are great for taking the kids fishing. I rig them just like txshotgun gun said by tying the line mid pole and wrapping it occasionally up to the eyelet then just run it through the eyelet (this will prevent you from losing one if you just tied to the eyelet and tip were to break). I cut the line about 8" shorter then the length of the rod and fish it with a bober, split shot and hook.
Good luck!

I still use one for kicks every now and then. They work great if you have a real long, stout one that you can use to lift fish straight up and over brush and such instead of trying to reel through it.
But now there's bamboo...and then there's "Calcutta bamboo." There's a huge difference between different types of the cane. Find you some calcutta bamboo and you can horse out some hogs. I've caught 15-20 lb. blue cats with it. Now if you're just going after sunfish and crappie I guess you'll be ok with other species of cane...for a while, but they will probably break. If you're unfamiliar with calcutta bamboo just google it. They are great for catfishing off the rocks during the spawn.

I used to just tie and tape the line to the end of the cane pole, put on a hook and split shot and was all ready for the crappie. Haven't used one in 30 years, but they sure were fun!

Reminds me of being a kid with a calcutta cane pole dunking minners. They were long and floated beside my tube when I was taking fish off. Good times!
