What are your opinions on brands or models of medium to deep-diving cranks that just seem to get through heavy brush-tops and cover better? Obviously, practice at getting a crankbait through brush is number one, but I'm just talking about lures right now.

DD 22s work fine. But the key to any of them is to know when you hit something so you don't set the hook into wood.

I fished a H20 shallow diver in lillypads yesterday and when it would hang, I would rip it out like a ratltrap in hydrilla....and they would kill it. Just hard to hook when rod was unloaded and at my shoulder. Lots of shad seen earlier flippin on tops of the pads so that is why I tried it and it worked.

Sorry I wrote a book but I love crank fishing!!

Fat Free Shad is my go to bait for heavy cover. The tight wobble keeps the hooks from swinging out too far and causing the hooks to snag the cover. Also when the bait pops off the cover the bait turns sideways and returns upright very fast and if you pause the retrieve the bait rises backwards and upwards allowing the hooks to pull away from the cover.

If you know your just running right above the cover looking for suspended fish try replacing the back hook with a single hook like the ones you use as trailer hook on spinnerbaits. I paint the tail hook white and use buck hair with silver thread tied on the hook like a something you see on top water baits. That added tail hook looks more like a tail and gives the bait a bigger look. The single hook allows a different wobble and it may trigger more strikes.

The bottom hook needs to be positioned so the two parts of the treble sits right up to the bait. The belly of the bait sits in the V made by two of the hooks on the treble. This gives the bait better dynamics for running true and less chance of snags.

I have gone to single hooks on both bottom and back hooks before but the hook up and catch rate goes down. The snag rate goes way up so I only use this in weeds or open water suspended fish. The bait will act totally different and will not dive as far BUT what this gives you is a higher chance of catching pressured fish that have seen a thousand store bought baits thrown by them every day!!

Land was created to provide a place for boats to visit!! It is when pirates count their booty that they become mere thieves. ARRRRRR....
