if you were able to set up shop near Hot Springs you wouldn't be able to stock enough gizzards--they would sell out every day.

The problem is not if you can keep them alive it is the fishermen who buy them that will have trouble. Not very many people besides guides have 30-50 gal. bait tanks on thier boat. If they do, they do like me and have thier grandsons throw the net and catch them. In 1996 there was a guy that had a huge tank in his boat slip. He sold the threadfin shad for $20/100. He only did it for a couple of years that I know of.

I have a 35 Gallon that I built cheap and it fits perfectly on my boat-the tank was on clearance for $100 and the filter system cost me around $25--well worth the money.

PS Frozen shad won't work very well on hybrids or Stripers. But they do work well on jug lines for cats.

I doubt that you could build a business on anglers like me...but I would pay a lot for prime gizzard shad. I went to Texoma for my first time recently on the TSA tournament and could not find shad...and hired someone to find gizzards for us and he could not find any. If you had some nice gizzards, I would have payed considerable.
If I'm going to spend that much money driving to Texoma (about 7 hours for me), hauling a heavy boat, and facing a 5:30 am captain's meeting...yes I would pay and tried to pay but apparently didn't get the right person.
With the economy like it is and getting worse, I think there may be a market there for infrequent and/or first time visitors to a lake. On my home lake, I can get shad by the buckets full and would never pay for them, but when hitting a new lake for the first time, I need help and am willing to pay for it... but don't know how many others may be like me.

I sell them for around 200$. and I'll warrinty them for a year.

I have the tanks ect I have around 3000 thredfin that have been alive for about 2 weeks now and only lost 20 over the the two weeks now.... What do you feed them? We haul bait to every TSA tourney. They get pretty skinny after 48 hrs.

It would work if you had a "shad selling boat" with a big tank sitting at the mouth of a big marina (like highport) on the weekend with a big LIVE BAIT sign on it...you would definately get business that way and it could be a good weekend gig...
guy down here sells horse pilchards (saltwater bait-6in) for a dollar a bait.
As for your customers keeping the bait alive is another story...unlike saltwater bait, shad do not stay alive for long in a traditional live well that most boats have..so yoour clientele would have to have a bait tank and o2

It depends on how hard they are to come by. Other lakes shad are more difficult to catch and so there would be more demand. One thing I want to add for you is the guys that can catch their own have the equipment to keep them alive. the guys that can't catch their own bait dont have the gear to keep them swimming either. I believe there is a market for it; just might want to have something else to sell also.

I love your idea and glad that you have found a way to keep them alive for such a long time. I live in Plano and have driven occasionally once a week to Texoma to fish. Although I like to use lures, I would love to have the option of having live bait especially shads that helps me catch more fish on slow days. Since it is already 1 hours drive to get to the water, another $5-10 a dozen seems reasonable for me. Isn't that about the going rate for other live bait? Since shads are harder to keep and better bait, another 20-30% premium is reasonable right? Hope you are successful in your venture!

I only fish Texoma a few days a year and if i can not find bait quickly i would buy. I have even offered a 1.00 each to people. I do have a bait tank. I think if you sold them to someone with out a bait tank they would be dead in minutes. Maybe rent bait tanks also.

My advice to you would be to build the business up. Make up a good business plan and portfolio and then sell it.
