Do you set the hook with a crankbait? or do you let the rod set the hook? Just asking

It depends on how you get bit. If it's a mushy bite I set it pretty hard.

I usually have a med heavy rod and set the hook with a swift sweeping motion. Not to hard to yank the hooks out, but with a med or med/hvy rod the sweeping motion will set the hook and not hit them to hard.

A few weeks ago, I lost two fish in a row on a brand new, fresh-out-of-the-box Strike King square bill. When I thought about it, I never set the hook well, I just kept reeling. From now on, I will definitely set the hook hard every time I get a bite on one of those.

You gonna lose some fish on a crankbait it is the nature of fishing them.

and if it's at the end of a looong cast I'll lean into them a little harder at first. But, that's truer with mono than fluoro.

I usually just reel faster and give it a firm tug, not really a full blown jerk. But, like JPost said, if it's a soft bite then I'll tug a little harder than normal.

I'd have to say 99% of the time I sweep my rod to one side or the other to set the hook

When I feel pressure I like to give a little bit of a snap. Just to make me feel like I burried the hook good. In many cases that fish may be coming right at you with that bait in it's mouth and even a sweep doesn't get the hooks in good.

Record one of the Bassmaster events that show on ESPN2, watch KVD fish a crankbait, almost every tournament... Do what he does! thumb
