Bro-in-law has a place down there. He read in the Startle-gram this AM that the fish kill looks more like 260+K fish killed. The only fish I saw caught in 4 days were drum kids were catching in the creek the comes in by DeCordova marina. Apparently the fish were trying to crowd into the creek to get away from the algae.
I heard that the algae blooms at Granbury have actually been more frequent in the past few years. I knew PK has had issues starting about 10 years ago. I wish it would rain and maybe that would help?

It just occured to me.... Can you carry the Golden algae from one lake to another? I don't know if the algae can survive outside of water or if it's harmful once dried. Anyone know? I'm going to power wash my boat now and flush the motor and live wells out.

I read that as well..What I can't understand is how they come up with that number.Did they account for the number of fish that never surfaced?

I agree. I think they used the PIDOOMA method. How can they possibly know how many fish were affected?

As of today there are no signs of the algea bloom on Whitney, only up the river are we seeing any dead fish. With all the warm weather we are having I don't believe it's going to affect Whitney as much as they are saying. All we know is that there are lots of big fish being caught and lots of anglers are missing out on some good catches up to 10.45 on Wednesday.

A friend and I kayaked down the Brazos from Glen Rose to Brazos Point today. There were few fish floating but the stench of decaying fish was prevalent. We were only able to catch large mouth and other game fish were creeks ran into the Brazos and provided fresher water. Aside from that I caught an 8 lb carp that was healthy and a 25 lb gar that was in decline(both on a light ugly stick with 8 lb P-line). 15 miles of river not a single sand bass. This golden alga will be in Whitney soon if it's not already. It was a fun trip never the less, we saw three bald eagles and two osprey. If any of yall kayak it's worth the paddle to see the eagles before they migrate back north...

Just got back from Whitney a few minutes ago. There is no GA on the lake that I saw. the fish are plenty healthy. Fished from Cedar Creek south. May be soome issues up the river but none in the lake that I saw. Plenty of good size bass to be caught, if you are on the right pattern in the right area. have not seen any beds yet but, it will happen very soon.

This scenerio seems much the same as the 2003 outbreak. We were fishing whitney then during spring break and the bloom had already killed a lot of fish on Granbury and Possum Kingdom. From Juniper Cove south, the fish were being pushed south and we were having a field day cathing stripers on rattle traps. The next month, dead stipers were floating everywhere. Whitney has never been the same nor do I expect it to get back to the way it was 10 years ago. I was hopeful a couple of years ago when you could go down this time of year and find fish, especially sandies with relative ease. Last years bloom and the threat of another one this year is a sorry reminder that this lake will never be the same.

I pray it does not travel down into Whitney, but I cant see how its avoidable. It doesnt travel to lakes that already have had it in the past. Once a lake has it , it is always there. The problem is when the conditions are right, it blooms. its always there but doent become toxic until it blooms. cool clear water is what it likes. Lots of rain and/or warmer temps will kill the bloom. Rain brings in muddy water and the sun cant create photosynthesis to produce bloom. GA blooms have hit Lake Whitney a number of years with varying degrees of fish kill. It probably happens to some degree every year. The cause being fertilizer runoff from farming/ranching operations creating the right water conditions for it to thrive and reach a large number of fish. There are state programs in place to educate and encourage farmers to properly apply fertilizer or decrease runoff from cattle operations, but they are about to get cut with every other "big government money waster" out there trying to improve how we conserve our resources. The algal bloom is not a natural process that we have to deal with, it can be effectively reduced with the right corrective action.

All we know is that there are lots of big fish being caught and lots of anglers are missing out on some good catches up to 10.45 on Wednesday. Good report. I have been all over the main lake from Uncle Gus' to White Bluff and the water looks great. Whitney was hit last year pretty hard and TPW reported ovr 65000 fish dead. Just keep in mind that the lake is 23500 acres and when you do the math that is only 2.96 fish per surphace acre, it hurts but not devastating. We caught Stripers, Whites and Crappie this past week and the water looks as good as I've seen it in years. Plus Whitney continues to put out some of the Largest Stripers weighed in at the TSA tournaments. Right now it appears the bloom is still contained to the river from Hamm Creek up and with the warming water temps and the green alga starting to grow looks like we will dodge the bullet.
