Just wanted to see if any seasoned fishermen could answer a couple questions I have always wondered about. I've always heard something about "if the cows are laying down, the fish won't be biting." Is this at all accurate? Another thing I'm not sure about is how storms/fronts mess with the bite...are the fish more likely to be biting before or after a front/storm? Thanks!

I don't know about the cows lying down, but as far as before or after a front the fish usally bite alot better before a front comes through. The high pressure behind a front usually shuts the bite down. Hope this helps you

Forget the cows, they don't have gills. I heard that one many yrs ago and never have found that to be true.
Weather changes do affect the fish especially when they are shallow Cold fronts tend to shut the crappie off. Wind direction changes can be a problem also.

I don't care if the cows are lying down, standing up, or flying around! If I am given the chance to fish, I go fishing.
It is always a good day when I am on the water. Cows were laying down this week and I caught a lot of MONSTER crappie, what do cows know, they can't cast!

Barometer falling, fish are biting. The cows feeding has some merit to it, the averages are in your favor if the cows are feeding more times than not when attempting to catch fish. As the farmers almanac discusses somewhere along with moon phases.

My father has lived by that adage for many years. We always look for them on the way to the lake. The funny thing is, he always says if the cows aren't out, goats or what ever live stock is out will do. LOL We never paid attention to the wind direction or pressure either. Your odds for catching the fish go up when you are on the water vs not. LOL

Fiction. Just like an old wives tale, pure coincidence can turn into the accepted norm pretty quickly. But then again, usually I'm too excited about going fishing to notice the cows.

YA gotta go when Ya gotta go. If you don't catch fish, blame the cows.

I use to believe that the cow thing was an old wives tale, just like I did with the moon phase. I've lived long enough to know better now. Cows are used as an example because they are a very common sight on the way to most lakes, but it can be any animal. Animals are much more aware of the weather changes and gravitational pulls on the earth than use humans, and react in very predictable order to those changes in nature. So when the cows aren't active, it won't mean that you're not gonna catch anything, but it will mean that you'll have to work harder at your fishing. And in the summer time in particular, you certainly don't want to pay much attention to the few days immediately before and immediately after a full moon So....live long enough and you'll learn things that the younger guys think is 'hogwash'.

Always heard the moon has to hold water for fishing to be good. That means no new moon or full moon minimum. It's an old Indian thing!
