Has anyone else noticed any snakes yet? They are alive and well on the banks of Lake Corpus Christi .

With the temps warming up, they should be crawling every where. Haven't noticed any on the lake yet.

I haven't either, but it is time. I have seen them during the white bass run when water temps were 55 degrees.

I notice snakes every year. Usually I think it's pretty cool to see nature.

Two days ago I was fishing in the nueces below lake corpus christi dam. Something grabbed my bait and yanked it under. I found myself in a tug of war with a water snake. It was a diamond back water snake, [nonvenomous]. Luckily, we don't naturally have water moccasins here. The closest are in the guadalupe river to the north and some are down in the resacas [oxbow lakes] south of here. No copperheads either, they are up in the hill country.

Well, it is wise to be cautious around them, but why hate and fear them?

Many times when I have asked this, the answer is "I don't know, I just do!!!"

People are really hard to make sense of.

It looks like an Indigo, but I have never found an Indigo that would bite, and they are really beautiful with that gun-metal blue? I know they are protected in Florida, and I just read (not certain about the validity of the source) that they are legally protected in most states making it illegal to kill, injure, harrass or capture or keep one (again, don't know for certain about Texas).

The Eastern Indigo can grow to 9' long, and They 'could' make excellent pets, unless you have other snakes, because they will eat other snakes.

I have caught several as a young child (one of them was over 6'2" (taller than my father), and NOT ONCE did it attempt to bite me. Try that with a Black Snake, and find your arm covered in teeth marks smile.

Last weekend, I took my boy for some catfishing.

We were sitting on the bank, he was about 3 feet in front of me. All of a sudden I see a salamander jumping out and running towards my boy. A few inches behind the salamander, a snake was chasing the salamander around. It was too close for comfort, so I jumped and picked up my boy and backed off.

The salamander escaped into the water (probably a bass got him afterwards). The snake stayed put on the banks and kept gawking at us. I grabbed some wood branches and threw them at him to scare him off.

My son was scared and wanted to go home. But we a caught a mudcat a few mins later and he was happy again.

I dont know the species, it was black with some yellow stripes?
Anyone know?

Nice catch ddr225! I've come across quit a few indigo's on the Nueces this year. Those guys grow huge down here! Rattle snake killers too, got to love that. BTW, that's the clearest I've ever seen that river. North of Uvalde? It's more or less on the chocolate side where I fish around Three Rivers.

I know that in southeast texas around 3500 rattlesnakes were released about 8 yrs ago on Hob Warren Road, they are on the protected list. If memory serves we correctly, the pigmy rattler, the canebreak/timber,rattler as well as the velvet tail,I'm not sure if the eastern diamon back is but if you kill one don't go showing it off or you will get a hefty fine.

Several years ago I was hiking in the mountians of Big Bend National Park. I was hiking up Mt.Emory, the highest peak in Big Bend (7280 ft.). After 3 and a half hours of a nearly a straight up hike I made it to the top. I wanted to take some pictures from there and had to squezze between a rock wall and a tree to get the picture I wanted.

Well I started to squeeze through and I heard this ratteling noise near my feet. I looked down and right between my toes was a rattle snake ready to strike. I don't know if teleportation is possible, but I do know that in the next millisecond I was six feet away from the snake.

I had my video camera with me and began to take pictures of the snake. When I got home and showed the video to my wife she asked why the camera was shaking so much eek

The next day I talked to the park ranger and described the type of rattle snake I had the encounter with and he said it was a black tailed rattle snake. He said fortunately they are not aggressive as the diamond back rattlers.

I will never for get that experience, it is burned into visual memory. sick

Roger
