I am Left handed and used right for everything. Baitcast and Spinning. I know a lot of right handers that use right hand reels and a few that use left handed reels but every single left handed person I know uses right handed reels.

My lefthanded son uses right handed reels, I am glad I do not have to buy new reels for him.

I am Left handed and use R. H. crank reels. I agree with another post that R. H. are made for lefties. When I cast I do not have to switch hands to retrieve. This lets me lock the reel as a bait hits the water, or unlock to let out line without switching hands, especially when pitching. I have used L.H. reels, but it felt awkward and that I had less control.

RH reels are really made for them and gives them a slightly quicker advantage. This is why I went to the LH version when Shimano first hit the market with LH versions that were quality reels. They are the true Right Handers reels.

I was taught at an early age about efficency and time management. I am a true lefty but use right handed reels. I was always taught that you have better feel with you dominant hand on the reel and actually pick it more time using a reel oppisite from your dominat hand, just for the simple fact that, most people cast with there dominant hand and then switch the reel over to the other hand and reel. So me being left handed and using a right hand reel, when i make a cast i never switch the reel over. I make a cast and keep on going. Watch the next time you see someone fishing and most will make a cast and then swap hands and start reeling in.

Lefty here, but only use right reels. When I was little had to use right handed reels and just stuck with me. I see it as a better way to set the hook since Im using my dominant hand!

I'm with TonyH.
Beyond the question of LH vs RH, most guys are picky about their reels.
Let him pick or there's a 95% chance you won't get him the one he really wants. There's just too many choices out there.
In the guy world, rods and reels are like shoes in the girl world. You wouldn't be happy with whatever shoes he would bring home as a gift. Lures are like jewelry (only cheaper)- you can bring him whatever lures you like and he'll be pleased. He may never use them (just like you may never wear that hideous necklace he bought you) but the thoughts were in the right place.
BTW, hold the rod, throw and fight fish with the strong hand, crank with the other.
