IMO, there is no need to strike at a buff when you are using a hair rig. Just use a hair that is 12 to 18" long and they will eventually hook themselves. If you are gonna use corn or dough bait, hit the lift.

only place I have had difficulty on hook-ups is at the cliffs, very deep water and fishing straight down, they never seem to run with the bait, just sit there and tug on it.

Anyone have some pics of some good running rigs? The easiest running rig is with a 1 or 2 oz egg weight. Thats what I cought that 32 on...the bigger came on a bolt rig, my percentage of bite to hook up has been better on the running rig. Also with the running rig I set my bait runners as low as they go. As soon as it runs pick it up and set the hook!

stiff rig works well for buffs too.
