Hey guys this is Dennis Cobb and I need some input. For those of you who don't know me, I have been Jered Mounger's fishing partner for the last 3 years. I am from Alabama originally and have family that lives 25 minutes from Joe Wheeler.
I have aquired the means of supplying skipjack-herring on a regular basis to this area if there is enough interest. Those of you who have used this bait know what an advantage it is to have!! I have already obtained my bait license and would like to make this awesome bait available to everyone who would be interested.
I am still trying to work out the details on bait size and shipping cost to get them here. Currently it looks like the most affordable size/quanity would be bait in the 7 to 8 inch range. At this size I could sell 12 pieces of bait for $20.00, this amount could last you the whole day and would still be considered big bait.
Like I said earlier, "I am looking for input" not currently taking orders. Please reply with suggestions/comments on size, quanities and pricing.

These guys down here fish with peppermint, gummy worms,chicken feet, chiken breast , chicken lips ... so I think the Skipjacks would go over well !

I have used it many times. It's like a shad on steroids and has lots if oil in it.

Never used it in freshwater. I'd be open to giving it a shot.

used it alot when i lived up there for a short time on Guntersville and Joe Wheeler and it is great bait! I would surely buy some....specialy during the winter!

Sounds like a good thing here, shad can be tough. Nobody likes to get soaking wet in the winter time throwing a net.

SSfireman- I will have to have them frozen to be shipped here. Skipjack will hold up to freezing as well as big gizzards, maybe even better. My plan is to vacuum seal each package of bait. As long as you break the vacuum before you thaw them they will hold up well.

Deerstrangler....Jered and I would both agree that using them in fresh water makes a difference. Ask T-MAC and Brother Terry about our trip to Cooper the other day. I would estimate 3 to 1 bites on skips over gizzards.

Tried it for the first time today.impressive on lake Limestone.

Freezing doesn't seem to hurt slip jack. It is a little mushy when it is fresh caught and doesn't seem any softer after being frozen. It has a real tough skin that will keep it on a hook real well.

Yeah. I talked to Terry while he was on the way home. He did'nt say y'all were using Skip Jack though. Hope you get enough interest for this to make it worth your while. Do you use it filleted or chunks?

That's the best part. Terry's a hoot to fish with. Just don't leave a drink unattended.

I am just kidding, Terry is a great guy!!! Jered, Terry, T-Mac and I had a great day of fishing on Cooper last week.

Okay guys, from all the positive feedback I've gotten I am going to go forward with this. Unfortunately due to some minor details it will be about 2 weeks before I can get the bait here. After I get it here I am going to give some to a few friends that are guides for performance evaluation.
I have used skipjack before and after it has been frozen and noticed no difference in it's performance. I need to see how it does with shipping on dry ice as well as get shipping times down. I want to have it here as fresh as possible and make sure it's going to be a quality product before I will even consider selling it!!

Never used skip jack b4 but heard alot of good things about it? Ill take some of that to instead of chasing bait (shad).so give me a holler!

Skipjack is great but just to clarify it is not as hearty as big gizzards. I have about 10 packages that were vaccum sealed when I got back from Alabama and have been using them each time I go out to the lake. Once they thaw they do tend to soften up, except for the head it stays on the hook pretty well. Just my .02

B or G......I want have any bait before the Benbrook tourney but I plan on fishing the tourney with Jered and hopefully have the bait with me at that time.

Chase....You're right the flesh does soften up but there skin is tough. I need some weights from you....PM sent!!!

I love the stuff, my biggest fish of the tourney Saturday came off a chunk of skipjack. It's real oily and bloody, can't beat that.

Is this the same skipjack that you can catch in salt water down on the coast? If so, I'll keep any that I catch for bait!

And if bloody and oily is the ticket, I wonder if jack crevalle will work?

jack crevalle is great bait also, i have used it several times in lakes with good results!

hey guys something you may want to try is not letting your skip jack thaw out hook it on while still frozen we have used them this way for as long as i can remember when they hit the water they will begin to thaw also one trip up here to oklahoma in the spring you can fill your freezer and there is your bait for the winter

Skipjack is wayyy more hearty than frozen gizzards. I froze skipjacks when we went to alabama in september, and fished with them through december, as long as they are taken care of they will last along time. Chris taylor catches his in the spring and freezes them, that is what he fishes with through the year. Dennis is a stand up guy, the bait will be quality tested first, he is not gonna sell you anything that is no good.

He guys.....sorry for the delay on the bait. I am still trying to get it here. This weather has slowed up shipping but I can assure everyone I will post when I receive it.
If and when the bait ever gets here I will be trying to make all tournaments within driving distance to sell bait. I am also going to set up a website with a shopping cart to purchase and make payments with paypal.
Just FYI.....I plan on offering more than just herring, there will be other cut baits to try as well.

CatfishN8.....It is my intent to be at the Lake Worth tournament on Feb. 20th. Jered and I may fish it if there are enough teams willing to participate. Also I should have the herring by this time and I'm looking forward to putting some faces with names.
