What cast net is on the top of your list? I prefer a Calusa but can not get it in a 7’ (Allowed by Law). I have a Fitec SS1000 Deep Water and love it. Which brand and why? Calusa, Fitec, Promar, Betts, Super Spreader, Bait Buster, Cracker, West Coast nets, Excalibur.

I throw a 7' Bait Buster in both 1/2" and 3/8" mesh. The 3/8" will catch just about any size bait. The 1/2" is a bit easier to throw, sinks faster and usually won't catch any shad less than 4" lone. The 6 panel design makes it open a lot easier than other designs. The dragon head also allows easy replacement of the brail lines when they snag and/or break. You also can't beat the price for the quality of net you're getting. I can catch shad 40 to 50 feet deep if needed with an extra rope attached. I just don't like pulling the net up from that deep for an extended period of time. Just click on the link in my signature.

Good nets throw and catch better, but when they hang, they hang and are lost just like a cheap one.

I throw a 5' walmart brand. 5' because it easier to manage in my kayak. walmarts brand because I snag to many and lose them in the salt. Also find walmart brand better than Academy brand

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

On the bait buster do you throw it anty different. Asking because i just got one and for the life of me i cant get it to open and when i do the side of the net overlaps the dragon swivel top of the net. I throw just like the video which is the way i throw my reguar net and i throw it just fine

TX law does not say 7 foot , It says 14 foot diameter but don't get me started. Most 8 foot nets are less then 14 foot diameter. The Texas cast net law is pretty squirlly in my opinion. Never let a game warden measure your net by its radius, make them spread it out on the ground and measure it, then how much are you going to stretch it. How about if you get a ticket and take it to court, are they going to spread the net out in the court room ?

I agree with captain steve. I would pay good money to see anyone physically throw an 8' net and get it to open more than 14' in diameter. I guess if a warden asks you how big it is you can tell him it's a 13.5 foot diameter because that's what it will open to on a good throw. See if he can make it open more than that.

To the original question:

The Fitec ss1000 or 1500 in a 1/2" mesh is great for deep water. A 3/4 lb net is easier to throw in less than 10 feet.
