I'm going to be buying my first boat here very soon and wanted to get everyones personal opinion on the "Do's, Don'ts, and Must Have's" when looking around. I want to get a good idea on what a good first good boat would be. Keep in mind that I'll be looking at used boats, not new. All recommendations/suggestions are welcome...

Well you have the right start by buying used. Let someone else eat the "drive off the lot" depreciation. I have had two new boats and one used and will never buy new again.

Make sure that the horse power is the most that will legally fit on the boat. You will love the extra power and it will help with resale. Also, take it to a reputable mechanic and have him look the engine over and do a compression test.

Buy the biggest boat and motor that will fit in your budget. No matter how big it is, you will always want bigger or more storage, etc.

Reliable engine was my #1 priority. Sound hull was #2. Looks #3.

You MUST have the engine checked out by a certified technician. (Compression test and everything else.) If your spending 25+ I wouldnt by without some warranty left on the engine.

DON'T buy without a test drive on a lake with a little chop. Run everything on the boat through its paces. Including lights, pumps, TM, etc.

And I know who "Jeff" is.

do some research first....ask for demo rides in all conditions, get a certified tech ( not a mechanic - a tech) to do a complete inspection on the boat. take to a good fiberglass shop in your area for a hull inspection....

Interesting statement. Guess you aren't biased. Care to elaborate on your reasoning?

I have to disagree with this statement. It is like Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge. Buy what fits YOU. Champion, Skeeter, Stratos, Legend, Bass Cat, Phoenix, etc. are all great boats.

Buy the boat that makes you happy not what everyone else says is a good deal. Have the motor checked by a certified tech.

Think about the resale value when you are buying. I have always been a Ranger guy and they ALWAYS sell when it comes time for another one. You may save some money by buying a different brand but it cost you when you go to sell it. Look at resale values of name brands like Ranger, Skeeter, BassCat, Triton and then buy according to your taste and budget.

Make sure the title is in the owners name before you drive out to look at the boat. Do not buy a boat if the title is not in that persons name already. Lots of people slack on getting this stuff done and they also do it to get around paying sales tax.
