Just got my first traler with oil bath hubs. What is the maintance on these. I always hand packed my old boat trailer Bearing once a year, but not sure what to do with these. Lots of good info on the trailer hub thread just not much about oil bath hubs.

just remove cap and plug and check oil level occasionally. oil to bottom of hole . if needed add 50 wt oil. should be ok unless shows signs of leaking.

IMHO; Drain the oil. repack with Mystic grease and live happly ever after. Now that is my feelings about oil bathed hubs. Others may like them, that is until they puck out the oil at 70mph in downtown rush hour traffic. But remember that's just me.

I have seen a few smoked axles because a seal ruptured or the sight glass cracked or got knocked off. I prefer grease

All the 18 wheelers use oil bath hubs. They do fine if they have been installed properly and you watch them.

On maintenance you should just watch the color of the oil. If it stays black you're good to go. If it starts turning a lighter color you should change the oil.

They now don't recommend you change the oil as often as they used to. Twenty thousand miles and fill the hubs completely up.
