Hey Mike!

Whats Up man... Holt here... I guess I should call myself skeeter steve now..LOL
I didn't know you posted here. I'm on here almost everyday. I thought that was you after I saw your profile w/ cable/guide... I was out at Keiths park about 3 weeks ago w/ my brother and we did notta nothing. Only one channel cat at the end of the day. So they weren't running then for sure. This weekend looking like a good one though. We're gonna be out there tomorrow. I'm taking my boat out I'll be there at Kenny's at about 1:00. We're goin to try for the blues and maybe some night fishing at the 49 bridge.
How's that new Blue Wave working out for ya?? Sounds like you've found the early sandies this year after seeing your other posts. Let me know if you're gonna be out there tomorrow or if you wanna hit RH sometime. My email is sholt.sholt@verizon.net and my cell is 214-952-
7994......

talk to ya soon,
steve

ps - I was at TJ's last week and he said that George caught the lake record blue (80 lb's). I never saw anything about it here so I don't know if it was ever confirmed...

I guess it was true.... This was in the Dallas Morning News -

Cowboys official plays hooky but works way to a Tawakoni-record cat

07:03 PM CST on Saturday, April 3, 2004

By RAY SASSER / The Dallas Morning News

John Hickman has a 38-pound blue catfish mounted in his game room. Until March 26, the big blue cat was the biggest fish Hickman, marketing director for the Dallas Cowboys, had caught.

On that fateful Friday, Hickman, who felt a little guilty about playing hooky from the office, caught a Lake Tawakoni-record blue catfish nearly twice the size of his mounted fish.

"Just about everybody in our office likes to fish, and we like to kid one another about fishing," Hickman said. "I fish pretty regularly with George Rule, a fishing guide at Tawakoni. I was fishing with George when I caught the 38-pounder."

Hickman had a fishing trip scheduled with Rule on March 26, but he'd forgotten about it. On March 25, the guide called to remind Hickman they had a date and the catfish were biting.

"I usually take clients on those fishing trips, but I didn't have anybody lined up," Hickman said. "I told George, though, if he could catch the bait, I'd be there to go fishing."

Rule targets big fish by using live shad, which he laboriously catches by throwing a cast net. Catching bait is hard work. Rule caught the bait, and Hickman took advantage. He also took his lifelong friend and regular fishing partner, Vincent Thompson, along for the ride. Thompson is the Cowboys director of human resources.

"I figured we'd fish for half a day and be back in the office by mid-afternoon and get a little work done before the weekend," Hickman said. "We had a pretty good morning, and Vincent even caught a 30-pounder. I remember looking at my watch and seeing that it was 11:30 a.m. I was just about to suggest that we head for the marina when one of the rods went crazy."

Hickman grabbed the rod and found himself connected to a big, strong fish. The cat came to the surface, and Hickman saw a tail that looked much bigger than the tail on his mounted catfish. Then the fish dived deep and settled in for a give-and-take slugfest.

"All I could do was hold on and hope for the best," Hickman said. "George had 40-pound line on his heavy rod and reel, but it didn't feel strong enough against this fish. When we got the fish up beside the boat, George was going crazy because he had a pretty good idea how big the fish was."

The big blue cat was tired, but the battle was far from over. Rule tried to scoop the fish in his oversized landing net, but the catfish wouldn't fit. Then the fish made a surge, and the line was momentarily tangled on the boat's bow eye. When the fish came free with the line intact, there was another cause for panic. The fish wrapped the line around the anchor rope. The line was frayed for eight feet, but it held.

Hickman finally got the fish's head in the net, and it took all three men to wrestle the blue into the boat. It bottomed out a 70-pound scale Rule had in the boat. The fish was 48 7/8 inches long.

"I thought about donating the catfish to Bass Pro Shop for their aquarium, but the fish was too big," Hickman said. "The Bass Pro Shop people were afraid a catfish that big would eat the other fish in the exhibit."

By the time Hickman, Rule and Thompson found a certified scale, the catfish had been out of the water for about three hours and had undoubtedly lost weight. It still weighed 63.5 pounds, exceeding Frank Raney's 2002 lake-record blue catfish mark of 62 pounds.

"I really meant to be back in the office by 1 p.m., but it took awhile to get the catfish weighed on certified scales and do all the paperwork to submit the fish as a record," Hickman said. "I told my boss, Stephen Jones, that I was doing some grass-roots marketing for the Cowboys.

"Besides, I'm in the record book. My office fishing buddies can't jack with me, because I'm in the book."

Larry,
Thats odd... We fished shallows up at Windpoint park and down at the East Tawakoni flats about three weeks ago and didnt get anything. What were you using for bait because I'm willing to try one more time this week for the blues in the shallows before the spawn turns off and I start my spring hybrid/striper patterns for the year. I was using worms and cut shad....

thanks,
steve

I fish with Larry alot and I can tell you that he was using Danny King Punch Bait. That's all he ever uses. Don't think that it won't catch fish, because I know that he and I have caught more than I care to count using it.

I need to get me some......

Hey Bluwave Mike - We tore em up again last night at the little 276 bridge we were talking about, around from Keiths cove. I found that depression/hole on the other side you told me about and hit some big sandies but no hybrids. My son, Eric and I had a good time though. He talked for an hour about the first one he caught and then we started filling up the live wells after that. I wonder if this would be a good weekend for the cats since its supposed to rain and the big cold front coming in....

You should get out there and give it a whirl. Larry and I were fishing on RC last weekend right before the storm blew in, and just tore them up. Get out there give it try.

Are yall drifting the shallows? And do you have the punch bait on the bottom or suspended? Also do you know what part of Tawakoni yall are finding them? I haven't been able to locate them but I keep hearing that the fishing is good

thanks,
steve
