other than my custom builds i like the scott rods; nobody mentions them. I have two 8 weights, a 7 weight, and a 5 weight. They are not fast rods but fit my casting style. Scott rods seem to use the same or similar blanks thru various model lines with the hardware seperating the most expensive from the least expensive. At least that's my take on it, but i could be wrong-p- I don't have a 9-wt so maybe I should stay out of it but for a variety of reasons I have some kind of oddball attachment to Scott fly rods. I took an old Scott G-series fly rod on a hike from Tahoe to Yosemite many years ago and it supplied us with a goodly number of meals. A few years later I broke that rod on a hike in the Golden Trout Wilderness. I still miss that rod. I don't own any of them but I have cast the A2 and A3 and really like them. The fastest of the Scotts don't fit my "style" all that well; like the 9-wt tip-flex Helios I cast a few months ago they just feel too stiff for me although I'm sure the best casters could probably throw the entire line and then some with them. The craftsmanship in these rods sure does suit my eye, though.

So you're s SCOTTSNOB?! Kiddingkiddingkidding. Scott does seem to have resurrected their reputation as of late, and if there get to be more of them out there, then perhaps I would be able to afford to delve into the used Scott cult. There are just so many Sage rods out there that they "circulate" more. That said, here's a something of a deal - http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/spo/2034952140.html . Good luck getting a response though.

Robin should make sticky threads for 00 through 12 wt rods, keep all the convos in there. Make it easy for when someone decides I want a X weight rod, I wonder what people's opinions are? They don't have to create a new thread.

Casting far is overrated. Accuracy and ease of casting are not. Rod weight, especially when you get to 8-10 weights is underrated. Feel is one of those things that for many is tangible, and harder to define, except that you'll know it when you feel it. Word on the street is that Xi3's lack feel, and that's why guys are scrambling for the "old" Xi2's. In the end Mr. Easterley hits it squarely - it needs to fit your style. I would say a rod needs to also conform to a basic mathematical formula - bushwhacking + unknown topography + unknown fish = "cheap rod," and known topography + known fish + known conditions = "snobby rods." Boy, I hope everyone agrees with me because I don't know if I can take the hazing! I totally agree - ignore the hazing .... Fly rods - casting - fly tyin' are just a means to the end - it's the fight in the fish for me .... IMO there is a difference between "cheap" and "inexpensive". George

The best rod & line is the one that you are comfortable with. It's the rod & line you have made thousands of casts over the water. It's the R&L that don't even think about when fishing. It's the R&L that you can make that off hand backcast to a fish that's boiling in the blink of an eye. When you quit thinking about the rod and think only about the fish, you've found the right rod.

Nothing worse than not being able to cast far enough to put your fly in the blitz while the other guy is pulling fish in right and left.

Nothing worse than not being able to cast far enough to put your fly in the blitz while the other guy is pulling fish in right and left. Lot's of truth in this statement. It was a blitzing school of white's on Ray Roberts that were out of my casting range that helped inspire me to learn how to cast. Rex
