As long as we're talking trout, here's a new report from TPWD - http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/newsmedia/releases/?req=20101025a . Too bad we here in DFW are actually closer to Oklahoma trout waters. I wonder ... all things being equal would you rather fish the Guadalupe or Broken Bow?

Being that I'm a lifer with TU, I'd rather go down there...and usually do more often than I go to Broken Bow. I do fish the Blue River with regularity.

I don't think I've been to the "southernmost US trout fishery" nearly enough. Maybe this is the year.

I would pick The Guad every single time. Make sure you stop by and say hello to the good people at Greene Outfitters when you go.

I like the guad alot, it would be nice if they could get the trout count up. 10 fish per hour isn't really anything to talk about. on average I do catch better fish from the guad. LMF gets more of my time due to me being closer and there are always lots of fish but most being your normal 8-12" stockers. the crowds can be ridiculous in LMF with the quad in my experience has not been as bad. but if i really want to trout fish i normally head to Arkansas. i'll be at all three several times this winter

The "ten fish per hour" was their electrofishing rate. I was at a meeting with several of the TPWD fisheries biologists yesterday and one of them sought me out to inform me that when he was doing electrofishing down there several years ago they were averaging just two fish per hour, so this year's holdover percentage is quite remarkable.
GRTU should start stocking around Thanksgiving and TPWD in early December, so the fish numbers will markedly increase.

i understand that, i guess what i was referring to is go to arkansas and shoock those waters and you will have 10 fish a minute.
i would be interested to see TP&W shock early sping when all the winter stockings are through to see how the numbers compare to shocking rates in early fall before they start stocking to get a idea of how many fish really hold over.

TP&W's stocking timetable is ruled by when they need hatchery space for their next season of bass. They try to clean out all the trout in early spring so they have room for all the bass the brooders produce.
FYI, none of the shocked fish were TPWD fish. Their 8-10 inch stockers don't summer over nearly as well as the big fish GRTU stocks.
The Guad is no competitor for the Arkansas fishery, and doesn't try to be. It's just the main place in Texas where it is possible to catch trout all year long.

I think I am seeing new verbiage "Guad ... catch trout all year long." How taxing is that on the fish - to be caught in July in Texas? If they aren't new words, maybe I just have Guad. on the brain.

When minimum flow agreement is in effect (as it was this summer) the water temps in the Guad stay below 70 for a good 8-10 miles downstream from the dam. In those conditions, it is not harmful to the fish to be caught and released. If the agreement is not in effect (in other words, if Canyon Lake has not filled to conservation pool within the calendar year), flows are typically much lower, and then the water stays cool enough for trout viability for only a few miles downstream and catching a trout further downstream can be harmful to them.

According to someone at Tackle Box Outfitters its a death sentence for a fish if its caught March-October. Even if it seems to swim away just fine. Then i got a conservation lecture, made me want to gouge my eyes out.

Hmmm, I guess I didn't realize the retail sales people at Tackle Box Outfitters were also fisheries biologists.
