There are wild trout in Texas right now, in McKittrick Creek, so they did not fail. They just happen to be rainbows that were dumped in on top of the cutts.

Just as in many other states, as habitat for trout was degraded by human intervention, their native range has been diminished. And, just as in many other states, as streams are cleaned up and water quality is enhanced, they can again be viable.

Have fun fishing for what you enjoy in the manner you enjoy. Everybody else can wax scatophagous and expire.

I just don't get to fish anywhere nearly as much as I want to. I allow the idea of bashing somebody's fun gets under my skin more than it really ought to.

Actually, in just the last week, I have been called a "cockeyed optimist," been told I "tilted at windmills," and was referred to as "one of those guys" as in: "You're from Trout Unlimited? Oh, you're one of those guys."

I wear all those appellations as badges of honor. I add LHD's comment to the others and wear it with pride.

I love trout fishing (because we have none); I just hate the stereotype. All other judgments get swept under the rug.

This is one of the more interesting thread here recently and thank you mickfly for bringing it up. Good luck with reviving the native trout in Texas. I, like yourself believe that its possible to revive the native trout in Texas with proper conservation and cleanup of the natural stream where they've swam in the past. Daunting, no doubt, but its possible.

Personally, I can see myself wholeheartedly supporting such endevour with donation, time, and help with research, such as fly fishing for them natives for DNA sampling . No, seriously, provided with a concrete plan, it would be an honor to be part of such project. I will also be the first one to bail out if this restoration project resembles anything like the Annual Guadalupe Massacre for posers project. That one is just a furking circus and to this day I don't understand why TU is even involved.

Horn, the Guad thing never has claimed to be a restoration project. If that's the impression folks have of what we think we're doing, then I can see why all the grief about it (incessantly BTW) . How do you restore something that never was? No one is that naive.

The GRTU Lease Access and Trout Stocking Program is totally self-supporting. No TU membership dollars or TU national dollars are used. We have 500-700 trout fishers who decide each year to support a program that provides access to the river and stocks nice trout.

This year, as in many years, there are trout that holdover through the summer months (since the water stays near or under 70 all summer), and we often see trout spawning and catch young of the year trout. Since these trout are protected by a Special Regulations, catch and release fishing zone, very little "massacring" goes on, at least not legally.

TU is involved because the Guadalupe tailwater provides a unique opportunity for Texas fishers to catch (and release) a coldwater species in their home state. GRTU monitors water quality and temperature and conducts river cleanups and habitat restoration projects.

Elsewhere on the Guadalupe and in over 200 other bodies of water in Texas, TPWD stocks trout to provide the same unique experience, but these trout are stocked as a "put and take" fishery. Annual TPWD stockings total about 300,000 trout, compared to 8 to 15 million bass.

preast, I said its a circus and an annual hatchery fish massacre and in no way a restoration project in regards to GRTU project. But it is interesting you mentioned that others think you guys are actually restoring specially with all the natural reproduction claims. Hey, you clearly love the Guad, I just don't get it when there is an actual natural stream trout have thrived once in Texas. Its still there.
