Dont think the chew thing is true. Their fangs are set back a little in their mouths compared to a rattlesnake but they are fangs nonetheless. Elapids all have similiar fangs- not hinged like a vipers. Are the fangs pointing backwards down toward the throat like a boa or python ? You really have to work with one of those to get it to let go.
I know hognoses are poisonous but they're "rear-fanged" with the poison ducts venting into the back teeth. They have to get a really good mouthfull to inject the toxin. Are corals the same ?

A friend of mine was about 8 yrs old and he picked one up and stuck it in his pocket to take back to camp and show his Dad (they were camping near Lake LBJ). It was a little one though, less than 9" long. He had no idea what it was. Luckily, he was not bitten but it was probably because the snake was so little it could open it's mouth enough to latch on. I think I have heard this before. Was it at Camp Allen by chance?

We had some show up in Cedar Hill when they impounded Joe Pool Lake.Unfortunately we were visited by all the other critters who lost thier home as well. Looking forward to the proposed "Marvin Nichols Reservoir" that will flood areas of northern Titus and southern Red River counties along Sulpher bottom so Dallasites can water their lawns. </sarcasm> There's beaucoup scary critters in there.

A hognose carries a toxin but it is not harmfull to humans. There are tons of them sold as pets.

You might want to check out Kingsnake.com They're poisonous enough to make you sick (although not as bad as a pit viper).

I find them in my back yard here in San Antonio at least once or twice a year. I never kill them, I always catch them and take them to a creek bed about 2 miles from my house.
They never did anything to me, why would I harm them? So they won't harm children, pets, or loved ones.

Gotta agree with that one. I like snakes fine (had several as pets) but any copperhead on my property puts his life in my hands.

Growing up in Houston, I've seen 4 coral snakes that I can remember and they were all after floods. Longest one was over 4'. Didn't know they lived underground. Makes a lot of sense now.
