That would make a cool looking hat band. I turned over a log looking for worms and found the other kind - King snake. I had to change my shortays.

That makes sense. The ground is so fissured in the hill country that it can be difficult to find snakes. You probably do have a nice population of coral snakes there, but only see them after a hard rain or when temps fall enough for them to move above ground.

As far as the guy who was bitten, why would he pick up a coral snake with his bare hands?

This is one I found in Brenham about 4 1/2 years ago. I think it was 34 inches. Donated it to a zoo.

Those are really pretty to look at in pictures, but I don't want to come across one in person!

Pope 1,

He did not pick up the snake up. He was walking his dog along a creek. His dog was trying to get to it so he picked up a stick to flick it out into the water. When he went to flick it, it struck up and got his thumb. I guess he needed a longer stick.

I saw a very small one in my backyard...almost stepped on it wearing flipflops, didn't stick around long enough to see the exact color pattern...

A friend of mine was about 8 yrs old and he picked one up and stuck it in his pocket to take back to camp and show his Dad (they were camping near Lake LBJ). It was a little one though, less than 9" long. He had no idea what it was. Luckily, he was not bitten but it was probably because the snake was so little it could open it's mouth enough to latch on.

I find them in my back yard here in San Antonio at least once or twice a year. I never kill them, I always catch them and take them to a creek bed about 2 miles from my house.

They never did anything to me, why would I harm them?

We had some show up in Cedar Hill when they impounded Joe Pool Lake.Unfortunately we were visited by all the other critters who lost thier home as well.
