You must live underground. They are subterranean and die if the temp is above 85, which is why this one was above ground. I see one or two a year if I look really hard.

He was outside of my mom's house in Eastern New Orleans. I wanted to kill it but at the same time I was not getting close to it knowing how dangerous it was. I let it be and when I returned to the house later in the day it was gone.

You don't have worry about these snakes. They do have a deadly venom, but are very reluctant to bite. If harrassed, they often perform flip-flop twisting displays which looks like they are having a seizure. You would have to actually grab the snake to get it to bite you. Even then I would probably go crazy twisting and turning before it turned to bite you. As someone mentioned, bites are so rare anti-venom is not readily stocked. Nobody has been killed by a coral snake in Texas since the late 1800s.

Nobody could sell the venom either. No lab would accept some fluid sent to them from someone claiming they "milked" a snake. Labs don't even take the venom from the "rattlesnake round ups" because the milking methods are so poor and unsanitary.

There are quite a few around Central Texas, I found one crossing the road to my house but just took pics no need to kill those they cant hardly bite you too small, but dont go skaking hands with them or nothing might not be good for your health.

My fishing partner killed one on his back patio last week. It is the second one he has killed on his patio this year. I also have two friends who have been bit by them in the area. One was last summer one was about ten years ago. The friend that was bit about ten years ago spent 4 days in ICU. It hit him on his thumb and as he tried to pull it off so it could not get the venom in him it kept climbing up his thumb more. He had to cut it in half to get it off.

I live out by Lake Austin and rarely see snakes. For some reason when I do it is usually a coral. I think there must be a colony of them around here. And no, I don't live underground.

Having to cut a coral snake in half to get it off your thumb would be a bad day. That really happen???

Yes it really happened. He is a stocky guy and is a mechanic, so you know he has good arm strength. He said he was pulling as hard as he could and the coral was still progressing up his thumb.

Dont think the chew thing is true. Their fangs are set back a little in their mouths compared to a rattlesnake but they are fangs nonetheless. Elapids all have similiar fangs- not hinged like a vipers.

But they do have to actually bite you to envenomate unlike a viper that can just quickly strike and stab you with its fangs. Thankfully their mouths are small so they have to get a hold of your finger or toes.
