what is the best kind of brush or roller to use when staining a fence?

Not a clear stain, but not the thickest stain either.

Thanks

I tried using a brush and it was taking forever because the boards were soaking up so much stain. I spent $60 on a Wagner power sprayer and think it was a great investment. I was able to do both sides of the fence in about 2 hours vs all day with a brush.

roller is best of those options, but if you are rolling the stain keep a big 3-4" brush so that you can back brush as you work. back brushing is just brushing out places where the stain looks like it is rolling on thicker. if you dont back brush you will most likely have lines that show up on your fence. the best option is as sprayer like a wagner or renting an airless. remember to use to back brush with whatever method you use.

You might try using a pump-up sprayer. I used one when I water sealed my fence and picnic table. It worked good.

Ready Seal and a pump sprayer worked for me.

All of my fence jobs that require staining have been done with a pump up sprayer and two guys following me with rollers. One has a 9" roller and the other a 4". The wider roller spreads the stain that is sprayed unevenly by the sprayer and the 4" takes care of the final imperfections.

If we are doing a BOB, then both guys use 4" rollers.

Ready Seal is the best stain I've found and offer 8 different colors. You can get it for around $75-$80 a five gallon bucket at Jamieson Fence Supply.

Ditto on the Redi-seal and pump up sprayer. Easy work!

+1 on the pump bug sprayer, just keep a brush handy if it runs on ya! Get a cheap one at home depot, and chunk it afterwards..
