if your using a slip sinker it doesnt matter what it weighs. a 2 to 3 oz no roll will get you some casting distance and hold your bait on windy days

How do you cast it with a slip sinker without it sliding way up the line and screwing your cast up?

should be a bead or bumper and swivel between weight and hook leader

yup, one or two slip sinkers then a bead ( i just get them little red beads in pack of like 20 that Walmart and Academy sell) then knot to barrell swivel then leader to hook with slip cork on it. The swing/force of the cast will hold the weights against the bead/swivel. they can't slide up the line until it hits water

I must have been doing it wrong. When I was casting the weight would hang in the air a lil to long it seems and then the weight would end up way far back. Like the bait was ahead of the sinker the whole time.

Still works better than a 3 way rig imo. I will keep playing around with it.

how long of leader u using? how close to bait is bobber? seems the bigger the bait the bigger the weights u need for casting at least for me.

We still talking about a santee cooper rig here? I am getting confused.

This is the rig I am talking about , dont know if its the same rig others are using . I googled santee cooper rig and 2 styles seem to show.

The first pic is what I consider "tight" linning. Might work well in some areas.
The second pic is the way I have been doing it with a little more slack in the line but enough resistance to see what happening on the other end of the line.
Also if you use the wide weights the rig will have a tendency to raise up when you reel in fast and not get hung up on stuff on the waters floor. I was a die hard carolina rigger, lol. but haven't looked back after going to this style. Depending on the size of fish your after will determine the size of your liter line. Using the Carolina rig I lost tons of fish just because of "tight" lining and to much resistance on the bait. Using the Santee rig, not sure if its the correct name, catches are up. The extra slack in the line lets the fish "inhale" it easier and run. The fish IMO have a tendency to hook themselves instead of you haveing to snag them at the right time.

Thats the 3-way rig pretty much.

Here's the Santee Cooper Rig:

It probably is , but the hook is not fixed on a 3 way swivel and the float and hook move down on top of the weight for better casting from the bank,IMO. When it hits the water it raises the hook up to the determined height.
The Santee cooper rig in the your pic looks like it might have a tendency to do this IMO. They both look good I guess it just depends on different situations.

On the Santee Cooper I have the cork only 1-2" away from the hook.
