if you're getting a lot of misses on a particular day, try some slight color changes

Bend the hooks out a little.

9 times out of 10 the bass are smaking it with their tales because thats how they do frogs and larger prey it stuns them just let the frog sit there and more than likely within a few seconds she will turn around and inhale it.

It seems these fish were taking it down because i had a lot of temporary hook ups, but then spit the hook right away... talk about frustrating

This sounds more like a rod issue. Try a stiffer rod with an extra fast tip and braid spooled. I got schooled on Welsh one day because of the same situation. Fish would pound my frog (Scum frog is pretty much all I throw), line would tighten up and I would set the hook but no fish. My partner in the boat said hold up your rod. When I did, he grabbed my line and pulled it straight down. He immediately stated, "get a new rod". Once I made the rod change, my hookup ratio increased 10 fold. my frustrations with frog fishing has now turned into my favorite way to fish. It is very addictive!
