I haven't had any luck with what I tried from there. Don't remember the name but it had a pic of a big catfish on it. The pic was the closest it ever came to me seeing a fish from it though.

Danny King's original will sometime work, but I prefer the sure shot. You can order it at catfishbait.net
The problem with Danny Kings is it is not very consistent these days.

I have used Danny King's from Academy with decent result on Ray Roberts. Drifted two weeks ago with cut shad, perch and Danny Kings. Caught one 8-10 lb Blue cat on DKs. Not another bite all night on the Shad or Perch. Went yesterday with my wife and son and managed 4 small cats in about 45 minutes on DKs before the wind kicked up and we had to head out. Bite started 30 minutes after anchoring and throwing out a couple of hand fulls of cattle cubes. Also had lines out with shad. No bites on the shad. 4 cats in 15 minutes on Danny Kings. I am going to try some Sure Shot, as the guys on this board swear by it for channel cats and it is $20/gal. Danny Kings is about $4/pint at Academy.

big marv's, or sure shot. both are handmade, not mass produced. both work VERY well.

I used Danny King's punch bait 2 weeks ago on Lake Cypress Springs and got great results. A friend of mine and I fished 2 nights in a row catching 21 catfish between the both of us the first night and 15 the second night. I really liked that stuff and will use it for sure the next catfishing trip I make. It consistently brought in fish of all sizes, big and small. I'm pretty anxious to see how good it will work on another lake.

Why would anyone want to use punch bait anyway ......all your going to catch is little channel cats .....never going to get a nice blue or flat head that way alot of people fish for channels to eat them. I've read on these forums that flathead, blues and channels (in that order taste the best) but anything over 10lbs gets thrown back in my book. I wont eat any flatheads or blues just because they have the potential to get huge.

flatties do eat the best. i have found that if you remove the mud vein from channel cat filets, they taste just fine. small blues are also very favorable table fare!!!!!!!

well, i for one love them 12 inch channelcat!!! team catbusters, you are not ever gonna catch a blue on punchbait unless you use it. give a call to Benny over in decatur who makes sureshot and i bet he can teach you how to catch blues on stinkbait. but you are right, you will probably not catch many big blues on punchbait, but the 2 to 10#ers dont seem to mind it.

i would never claim that punch bait is better than shad or other cut bait, but the one thing i really like about it is you can almost always find catfish that will eat it and you never have to touch the bait and get it on your hands!

I don't really know why but I but some Mr. Whiskers at Olsen's this afternoon. I already have Sure Shot, Sudden Impact, and Danny Kings. I would like to get my hands on some Big Marv's but I don't know where to get it. I am going to conduct that study. The only problem is that I don't have enough indentical gear. I guess I will have to come up with a rotation method.

If you can get your hands on a gallon of Big Marv's (catfish crack) and a #6 treble hook you will increase your catch.

I thought I only plugged my success and use of big marvs. Blue's will eat punch bait... but the majority will be channels. I have caught several blue's on Sure Shot... but since making my own... iv caught up to a 13# on it : ) So dont knock it 1 not knocking you! Someone said Blue's wont each punch pait... they will! just not as often.

Lake Fork ystdy caught 40 to 50 in 1 hour 30 min. Used CJs punch bait from Academy. Biggest one was 29 inch blue cat. True we had more small than big, but we had several nice ones, a lot perfect eating size, and a few dinks.

I was just in one of our Austin Academy's and noticed for the first time that they are now carrying CJ's punch bait. But they had several different "flavors" including the original, minnow, crawdad, and shad. I thought about picking one up but figured I'd see which "flavor" the experts on TFF recommended before getting some. (If I would have gotten some, I would probably go with shad since that is a very natural food source for the kitties.

Thanks DB. My gut feeling told me to go with shad. I'll try it out some time soon when the heat lets up some.

As a career banker, I've used DK's (the Wal-Mart variety in the blood flavor), and Sureshot, and just by catch ratios alone Sureshot has been much more successful. I think the effectiveness has a lot to do with the conditions. When it's good and warm, if you're using something that stinks real bad, it will bring in fish regardless of what it is, (unless it's that garbage in the stripey bag, that stuff ain't worth a flip). This time of year, at least on my home lake, you would have better luck diving in and catching them with your bare hands than you would with any punch bait. I acquired some gizzards and I'll try those next time out from the bank and see what I can come up with. I think it just depends on the mood of the fish, the water temp, etc. I've caught flatties on bait shrimp out of stock tanks. I honestly just think it's more a matter of where, when and what you're using as to what they'll eat.
As for the eatin' fish, that's also in the eye of the Beerholder. Fish is only gonna taste as good as the guy operating the fryer. I've had big ugly yella cat taste as good as any channel or blue I've eaten. I soak my fillets in buttermilk for a little bit, helps to get the funk out, then I season with salt, pepper and a little chili powder, then some Tony C's fish fry. I bet you couldn't tell the difference between a blue and a channel filet after that.

We us Mr. Whiskers. One reason is because Thom sells it in 5 gallon buckets...plus, I know him and like to support his business...but above all else, I haven't used a bait that works better. (for channels) (Although we caught a 22lb blue on it at Tawaknoi in December) If I'm blue cat fishing, I have fresh shad, not punchbait.

If you go to Academy, they have CJ's, best bait you can get at Academy for my 2 cents, it may be a little higher than 2 cents now, but still awful good bait.

Huhhhh Iv never caught any blues on punch bait ........Im in it for the fight and anyone that says channel cats are better eating than blues are crazy channels eat the nasty [censored] of the bottom and you can taste that in the meat.....flat heads are the best eating because all they eat is live bait other than cut shad when there really hungry.....But I fish for the big fish any thing under 10 pounds is a wast of good bait I guess I am crazy because I prefer channels to blues. And flatheads don't only eat live bait, because I have caught them on whole frozen shad, cut shad, dead bluegill, and cut drum. But I agree you have a better chance on live bait. And I like Billy Rogers Cheesebait but I am gonna try Secret 7 next time out.

J-Pigg is hard to beat. It stays on the hook and catches fish. I have used it on single hooks. But if you get that nasty stuff on you, it takes about three days to wear off.

This is a good, inexpensive punch bait if you want to go to the trouble to make it yourself. Called 10/10/10 (Is listed on a catfish bait website as coming out of Durant, OK) - 10 lbs. each of pork brains, grated cheese, and ground meat fat. Buy ground cheddar cheese in 5 lb. bags at SAMS, get meat fat at various grocery stores for as little as 10 cents lb. (Ask the butcher. Grind it myself.) I have found pig brains at Colonial Meat Packing in Dallas. (If anyone knows of another source, I'd appreciate knowing about it as finding brains is the hardest part of making this.) They come in 1 lb. containers with 12 containers to a box. I make the entire recipe but mix it in two 5 gal. buckets with half recipe in each for ease of stirring, etc. The buckets need a lid with a vent hole in top. (Stuff an rag in hole to keep flies out. Also keep in a protected area so water can't get into it.) Let it work off for a couple of weeks in the summer or let it set for months if you make it during colder weather (stir it every few days). After it has done its thing (will have a pinkish tint), remove to smaller containers like plastic coffee containers. Then stir in cattails to make a thick consistency that will stay on the hook. I gather cattails in Oct. or Nov. and keep them on hand. Do a lot of catfishing, and one batch will last a year or more. Costs about $40 to make the full recipe. Once it has all been mixed, it will keep indefinitely outside. I have used this bait when my fishing partner has used DK and Lewis King. Last week, my partner was using LK and getting no bites fishing next to me. He switched over to my bait after I caught 4-5 cats and immediately starting catching. Use this on Lake Fork for channel cats and have caught other species on it. Primarily fish for eaters (12"-4 lbs.) but have caught larger ones including a 25 lb. one two summers ago. The first week of Jan. another partner and I caught 146 (over 5 gal. of filets) in about 8 hrs. of total fishing time during that week.

Here is a little one I caught on Secret 7. Hmmm Here is another little blue one caught on Secret 7. Here is a smaller channel cat caught on Secret 7. True, Manufactured bait is not as good for big blues as shad or skipjack but if anyone thinks a good manufactured bait wont get a goodun once in a while has not fished with it long enough or has not been fishing in the right spots! Our fiber bait has only been available since March 2010, but I expect to see a few bigguns show up on this year.... I kinda like to go out and get into a mess of those smaller cats sometimes...Lots of action is lots of fun!

I'm a big CJs bait fan. Ol Charles is a good guy. His son will sometimes chime in here on the forum. I've used several of the flavors...I think I've had more success on the minnow. But not by much. I've never had a boring day using it. Not going to bash others, but I've used a few of the others....there's a reason why I continue to use CJs . He has recently put out a dip bait. He hooked me up w/a dadgum good deal over at the hunting/fishing show in Dallas. Can't wait to use it! To each their own.

Do any of you guys use a piece of sponge to soak in punch bait that has been watered down for better absorption, then dipped in punch bait?Seems like the smell would stay on the sponge forever, even after the punch bait dissolves off.

Well I used to swear by Danny Kings until the big recipe change scandal a few years back..left me with $119 dollars of worthless product. Since I only buy the smaller DKs to try occasionally. I gave Sudden Impact a try when it was first out on Team Catfish website...was dissapointed in not that it wouldnt catch fish....cause it did catch fish, just as a good as the old Danny Kings. Problem was it just wasnt a fiber bait as advertised but more likea dip bait. I added a couple containers of Danny Kings t oit to thicken the Sudden Impact up havent bought anysince...but the did post awhile back that they might thicken it...dont know if they did.All that said I like most use Shad most time, just use the Punch(fiber) baits when Channnels are nesting in rocks and shallow timber ect.

I have used Danny Kings during the spring spawn, and Sudden Impact next to each other. Both got about the same number of strikes, BUT I hooked twice as many on the Sudden Impact. The Danny Kings doesnt stay on the hook as well. I will be buying more Sudden Impact this season.
