Recently I wrote TPWD complaining of a decline in largemouth bass fishing on Ray Roberts. I promptly received from fisheries biologist Bruce Hysmith a letter and copy of their "Ray Roberts 2007 Survey Report". I applaud TPWD for taking time to answer my complaint and sending specific data on the lake. Here are a couple of highlights from the letter and data:
- They disagree with my observation, and claim that the 2007 LMB catch rate was at an all-time high (2007 reflects their most recent data).
- They did notice a decline in pure Florida LMB and recommend the stocking of Florida LMB fingerlings in the spring of 2011 and 2012.
- The believe the carrying capacity of Ray Roberts has been reached.
- There were no indications of water quality problems that would affect fish production.
Finally, as we now know, they saw no benefit to the slot limit, comparing Ray Roberts bass fishing to Lewisville and other lakes without a slot; and therefore, recommended dropping it.

Again, I'm pleased to have received a reply, although I wished the news was a little more encouraging.

Is great to be able to ask questions, voice complaints and actually receive a reply. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Well hopefully they'll make good on their word and do some restocking of the Florida strain fish...

Thats all well and good, but 2007 Data doesnt reflect fishing conditions in 2010.

bass fishing at ray roberts is pretty darn good to me. Definately better than Lewisville. Maybe a lil tougher in the 106 degree heat but still good. quality too. IMO

Better than Lewisville bass fishing is not saying a whole lot.

Mr. Highsmith has been around the north Texas fisheries scene for a long, long time. If he says they have recommended stockings of pure Floridas, you can take that to the bank. Whether or not the Commission approves the stockings (is up to them) but rarely do they decline such a request.

As for 2007 data being the last full survey report, that's not unusual.

I sometime get a kick out of those who would bash the finest Parks and Wildlife department in the United States. Lots of other states and even a few foriegn countries come to TPWD for help with their own wildlife and fisheries programs.

Be thankful for what we have in this state. TPWD can't please every single one of us at every water body all the time. Rest assured that they try their very best to do so.

Coincidence is His way of remaining anonymous.

Hallelujah! Someone finally said it! flehan

I will say that this summer has been as tough as I have ever seen the lake, IMHO that has everything to do with snow being on the ground for a week in March and little to do with TP&W neglecting the lake. Its not just Ray Roberts thats off this year... Eagle Mountain, Lake Worth, Joe Pool, and Grapevine have all been more difficult this year but when you find em its really been lights out. ON Ray Roberts you have sooo much structure its truly a needle in a haystack.

2 thumbs up to Mr. Hysmith! I have talked with him several times, and he would be more than happy to answer any questions I might have. It's good to have people like that in charge!

Kudos to gatoreyes for taking the time to bring this to the attention of TP&W. If we don't who will?

Obviously, current information is paramount. One can only hope they are not making decisions today (2010) based on information from 2007, especially since conditions seemed to have changed so drastically since then.

I'm wondering how hard it would be to set up a survey or even a simple website with the sole intention of collecting catch info.? Maybe they could offer a discounted ramp rate for posting. Nothing fancy, just something similar to the survey they had at fork several years ago set up to track fish over 7lbs. As I'm typing this i'm wondering why something similar is not already part of the TP&W site but I digress.

Anyways, just a thought...... We all know RR could use all the help she can get.....

This sounds like a good idea. I would be interested to know some current data on the lake and how that may influence how the lake is handled

Fishing conditions doesn't equal fish quality... Conditions are determined by fisherman. Quality in my mind is whether the fish are healthy and fish counts maintain population.
