Put in a switch. That way when not in use you cab turn off the unit and not wear it out, or over heat it if that is possible. Had mine now for about 4 months and really like it so far. You will see stuff you would have never found with regular sonar. Like sunken boats, head stones in cemetary plots actual buildings. and the sonar downscan overlay shows alot more than just a flat bottom. Enjoy!

WHen the HDS unit is on and you have selected the structure scan screens it will say no source, until you turn your switch on that powers the LSS1 Structure Scan box. Plus you will also have to go to the LEI web site and download onto a SD card an update for the structure scan to show up on the turn table of selection screens for the HDS unit. Also your structure scan unit has ethernet ports that can be utilized for hooking up other ethernet cable equipment. I also have the Sirius Weather/Radio module and the ethernet cable from it plugs right into the strucutre scan box and I have weather radar on my unit, along with radio. The radio stations also appear on the HDS unit and you can select the station on it and play to a radio thru a 3.5mm headphone extension cable. Just thought I would throw that info. in. Good luck with the unit, I have really enjoyed mine.

Does this headphone cable hook up direct to my HDS 8 to the head unit or the LSS1? I know which antenna I need but what does the service cost a month for your subscription I am sure packages are different but can you give some details I am intrested. Thanks!

Worm Drowner, On the Sirius weather/radio module LWX-1 it comes with a black box that you mount under the console. That little black box has a 3.5mm female plug hole. You plug the 3.5mm headphone extension cable into it and plug the other end into the front of your stereo which would be your AUX IN on the front. That allows the music to play thru the stereo. Now I am not sure I answered your question but this is what and how I have mine hooked up. I have an HDS5, LSS1 Structure Scan, an LWX-1 Sirius Weather/Radio Module, and a Sony Sirius ready stereo. The weather module is like a gps dome to pick up the Sirius Satellite signal it plugs into a black box via a Cat-5 cable out of the black box is a power connection and a ethernet cable and a 3.5mm female plug socket. The ethernet cable plugs into the Structure Scan Unit. With the Structure Scan unit already hooked up to the HDS unit via its own Ethernet cable that in turn allows me to get the weather radar function on the HDS unit. I am not aware of a 3.5mm socket on the HDS unit itself. But with that said, these different components hooked allow me to see weather radar, or I can go to the Sirius radio selection and select the station I want to listen to and it will play via 3.5mm headphone extension cable thru the AUX-IN input slot on the front of my stereo. the stereo's mode selection is set to AUX-IN not on Sirius Sat. The initial cost for the weather/radio subscription was about $50 bucks charged to a credit card or debit card. After that it is $25 a month. For just weather only it was $15. I cannot tell how many times it has come in handy. Beause the weather will show the cell and lightning as well as animate on the screen in realtime and is updated every 5min. so not bad to be on the water and tell which way that 35,000 ft thunderhead is heading. I hope I painted a well enough picture for you Worm Drowner. If i can be anymore help just let me know. And it was honestly not very difficult at all to install, I did all of mine myself. HDS unit structure scan and weather module the hardest thing of all was figuring out finally how to get the music from the Sirius Module to my stereo. Then I felt like, "duh" when I got it to work. And i did get a little help from the forum as well.

Worm Drowner, I select everything thru the HDS unit radio stations, weather, The HDS Unit will even scroll across the bottom of the screen the title of the song and the artist it will also list the sirius station you are listening to. The only thing I do with my stereo is control the volume. If a weather Emergency comes up in your area it will automatically inform you of it as long as you have selected it to on the HDS weather selection box. Just thought I would add that bit of info as well.

A cell phone will show you real time radar. What's the advantage of the Sirius weather over my cell phone ?

All i can say is whatever turns your crank. Do you get service on every lake you go to. Might want to think about that. Screen size for another. Does your phone sound an alarm for emergency weather information. Just another thing to think about. I to get weather on my phone. No comparison to what you see on the HDS unit.
