I live in Lufkin, we've got most of what you could look for from the big cities, Academy Sports etc... 30 min from Sam Rayburn & Lake Nacogdoches. 60 min from Toledo Bend, Lake Livingston, Lake Pinkston & Houston County Lake. 2 hrs from Fork. 35,000 population with a small town atmosphere.
If your looking for a place on the water, I'd check out Lake Naconiche just north of Nacogdoches, near Garrison. It's a new lake. I've been told it will be spring fed, with water cold enough to hold trout in some areas. Bass & trout. hmmm

The Atlanta area is pretty nice. Mainly rural with a "main street" kind of town center. Wright Patman is 15 minutes away (It's making a big come-back soon). One hour from Millwood in Arkansas. An hourish from Lake O The Pines, Bob Sandlin. Couple hours from Rayburn and upper end of Toledo. Thirty minutes from Texarkana (which has tons of good food, academy, gander mountain, the landing tackle shop). Forty-five minutes from Shreveport - (academy, bass pro, gambling, boat shows, lots of cool events at the century-tel center).
It's very quiet, good schools, good folks, few thousand population. Not a real need for a big police force if you know what I mean.

Sabine County is beautiful, peaceful and we love it here. We don't have all the amenities of a city (in fact we don't even have a single 4-way traffic light!), but Center, Jasper and Lufkin are close enough as long as there's not a shop-a-holic in the family. Taxes are low and interior property is reasonable. Fishing is great. Lots of historic stuff close by. Things run at a much slower pace here, so if you like that lifestyle it's great.

Longview (area)...we have a dozen lakes within a 30min-1hr drive. So many options, so little time!

I'd prefer the Athens area. Perhaps between Athens and Palestine. Some of the most beautiful country around east Texas, close enough for a day trip to the metromess, super friendly people.
What do you consider a "small" community daddystog?

One of my favorite areas also, I live about 25 miles south of Palestine, and the area east Of Athens has always been one of my favorite, also any on the communities within 30 mins of Lake O pines and Bob Sandlin nice part of the world.

Another vote for Sabine County...beautiful Toledo Bend that fishes like 3 different lakes so why go anywhere else ?
Big Sam is 45 minutes away if you really have to go some where else.
Very low taxes, nice people and a Wal Mart in 4 directions away.
If you want a hurry up life style, don't come here !
Never test the depth of the water with both feet.
