I am fixing to respool my baitcasters for a trip and I was going to use 12 but I am thinking that it is too small. What do you think? What pound test mono do u use? I use braid for my spinning reels, but I dont for my baitcasters.

well...if you're chasing specs and reds 15 lb. P line is actually a pretty good choice. You might even be able to get away with 12 lb. line given it's P-Line. It has 15 lb. diameter for better castability and more line on the spool but it is brutally strong. I'd say it's just as tough as 25lb. test of many other line brands. If you know you're going for bull reds I might bump it up to 20 lb. P-Line.

If you're going for trout then 12 is plenty. If you want to go for some bull reds then maybe 15-20 would be better. I spool my baitcasters with 20lb Power Pro.

I've caught bull reds on 10 lb. mono but I don't recommend it. I think 12 lb. would be fine for the average trout/red. If you want a little "insurance" then go with 15 or 20 lb.
The Bull Red run is generally in full swing by mid October.

Oh my! What about those treacherous oyster reefs? Maybe 25# just to be safe?? Wait for it... Seriously, I use 10# for specks & slot reds, Certainly nothing wrong with 12#. Gonna try the P line next time I re-spool the bait caster though.

I use 10# mono for my baitcasting rigs, sometimes 12# but 10# mostly. 8# on spinning rigs. I go after trout and reds while wading so that is the application I use it for. I use Izorline Platinum mono and nothing else since I find it to be the best mono for saltwater and haven't found anything better than the 10# Izorline Platinum mono on my baitcasters. It casts smooth and I can get 200 foot casts with it, it holds up, has good knot stength, low memory, and has everything perfect in a line. The only thing is that most tackle stores don't carry it but you can order it online and it is very inexpensive.
If I use braid it is usually 20# Sufix braid with a fluorocarbon leader.

I'm heading to Galveston tomorrow and have 2 spinning reels. I only have one baitcaster but it's a $100-$120 Shimano (Curado I think) and I don't want the salt water to mess it up (99% of my fishing is around Dallas), so I don't plan to bring it. The spinning reels are easy to clean/rinse off. Do you guys have any issues cleaning baitcaster after fishing saltwater? I'm able to throw all day without a backlash and really like the baitcaster, but don't want to ruin it.

I started using 65 lb Sufix braid on my freshwater stuff to pull fish out from under docks and cover without worry of snapping the line. It turns out you can cast the hell out of that line too. My saltwater stuff has 50 lb Sufix. It had nothing to do with size of fish. It was about casting smoothness and distance along with sensitivity and it comes in great hi-vis colors. I know if a fish runs under a pier or along the jetty it isn't going to snag my line on anything I can't pull it out off. I can straighten a hook out before my line snaps. It's also nice that I haven't had to change out my line in almost two years and it doesn't seem to be getting any worse at all.
The only thing dumber than a fish is a fisherman.

if you rinse your baitcaster afterwards it will be fine. after a few trips i take it apart and soak it in warm water for a little bit and then oil it up.

My Curados have been used in nothing but saltwater their entire lives. I have several that are 10+ years old and still going strong. Thoroughly rinse after each use and I strip them down for cleaning and lubing once a year.
