Garden spider - I've seen them spin nests near a front entry where the light is that attracts june bugs, moths and whatever. I've seen them get pretty big and fast. They are a good spider.

Ours is on our front porch....Gonna leave her there for a while and watch her.

Got 'em all over my yard in summer, and yes, they get really BIG and scary looking. I call 'em zipper spiders cause their web looks like it has a zipper in the middle. Asked my exterminator what they were one time and he also said they were known as garden spiders and very good guys. I still don't like them but let them alone to eat up the bad guys. One really big one fell on my shoulder one time and they are heavy, gave me the creeps for days. As long as they leave me alone I will leave them alone.

In the piney woods of deep East Texas they are know as
"Oil Well" spiders........and no, I have no idea why.

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Fishing rod in one hand - 10# LMB lipped in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO, What a Ride!"

Those are good spiders, but I wouldnt want one on me.... here is a great trick that never gets old. Find one and show a friend how to throw a grasshopper in the web, get a piece of grass and while they are focused on watching the spider wrap it up, tickle their ear and watch them stampede

I've always heard them called cotton wood spiders. They are great to keep around. Harmless and will eat all the bugs you throw in there web!

I picked up a watering can from my porch one summer , filled it from the rain barrel and went to water some plants. On the way , I felt a tickle on my arm and looked down to see a 2 pound black-freakin'-widow crawling up my arm. My neighbors thought I was having some kind of seizure. To this day, my arm starts twitching when I pick up a watering can. scared
