I have used a cast net to catch mullet in Rockport for many years.
Have used it successfully to catch shad at Ray Roberts lake, but having trouble finding shad from the bank lately.
Never tried below the dam. Is this a good place to cast net shad in the summer?
I have seen people on the "platform" above the outlet on the Ray Roberts dam with cast nets, but never tried myself.
Any guidance on where one can catch shad from the bank at Ray Roberts this time of year would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Phish

Around boat ramps and on the banks where the wind has been blowing into it.

shad are hard to find at ray rob right now for some reason. stop on your way up at lewisville and about any boatramp in the morning are holding them. then go to ray bob

Thanks! I caught one large shad near the ramp at Buck Creek under the willow tree about two weeks ago and a couple at the boat ramp near the RR Marina. These were 6-8" shad. Was thinking about trying the ramp at Little Elm park on Lewisville on my way to Ray Bob. I live near 121 and the DNTR, so LE Park is on my way up to Ray Bob. Any other specific suggestions on Lewisville?? I am pretty close to pier 121 marina also.
Been doing some evening catfishing from my Kayak with store bought shad the past few weeks and catching a few nice fish each trip. Also bought some Danny King punch bait at academy and caught a couple of keepers with it.
If you see a guy in Blue Ford Explorer with a yellow "Fish n Dive" kayak strapped to to the roof around Ray Bob this weekend that is probably me. :-)

I have been fishing Ray Roberts lately, a lot of small shad in the north end, but the big gizzards that I have been catching seen to be not running in schools, sometimes it takes me close to an hour to get a dozen, but they are big, I have been getting mine in 1-4' of water!!!

That is the scenario I have had with shad on Ray Bob this summer as well. I catch one about every 10-15 casts with the net. No real pattern or schools, but they are around 8" long. I typically cast the net near boat ramps or vegetation, and away from rocks!!! :-)

You can go behind the dam on top of the wall, and put 2 ropes on your throw net, throw inside the wall, and then throw just outside the wall, and catch a few, but after that they are spooked out of there and you might as well wait a little while before you throw again, since they are only letting out 46 cfm's of water there isn't a lot of them back there, the water is really cool coming out of the lake and you would think they would be stacked up there, but they are not!!!

Caught a couple dozen 4-5" shad at Little Elm Boat Ramp this morning and a lot of small one. Should be plenty for an evening of fishing. :-)
