My brother used to live in Columbus Ky right on the banks of the Mississippi. One of his inlaws was a professional catfisherman. Skipjack is what he used on his jug lines. Of course they were live but I guess frozen would work too.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.... W.C.Fields

[Sam I never said they dont work, I just said that I wasn't going to drive 6 or more hours each way to get some when I can get gizzard shad (which most of the time work as well or better for me IMO) here without driving LOL. Now I will grant that if we could get them fresh here, there might not be a better big blue bait. If you and Johnny want to bring me some I will make sure to soak them good to catch a big blue on. When yall come down I will make sure to block out some time to fish with yall instead of just chunking nets for bait LOL(my dang shoulder hurt for a week). Hopefully I will be back from my tuna trip in time to come see yall at lake Fork next weekend.
Were ready to go 2 more days & we will becoming to the great state of Texas!!!! I'll bring some Absorbine Jr. for that sore shoulder... You know if i got some to spare I'll bring ya a couple this winter!!!
If it ain't broke don't fix it...but go ahead and work on it anyway.....

I just love how this is put. I can tell you like those skip j's
this is my STANDARD reply to Skips ALAWAYS!!LOLThe skip-jack is an elusive temptation for fisherman & Big blues! There mere presence could be deemed "Holy" The Blues tremble with excitement as a freshley cut skip enters the water after a rigorus ceremony. They can bring sucess to day that normally spells doom.. Their mighty presence is sought by many but known only to a few..the few that brave the challenge, time and $$$ it takes to track them down. Then there is the "catch" once a ceremonial grade skip is caught (17 inches min) it must be cared for with loving hands and stored with the ut-most care...They must be guarded 24-7 from intruders wishing to help themselves to the solid gold prize!!!Then comes the day for action!!! What a day it could be for those who rig their tackle with the strongest line , the best hooks, and strongest rods and reels.....I am gonna have to stop now and go home to check my alarm system on the freezer!!!!
If it ain't broke don't fix it...but go ahead and work on it anyway.....

i have also used cut mullet with good results. I am glad that someone has some luck with these. The meat was like mashed potatoes when I tried to use some of it.

I ordered some frozen skipjack from fishingfreddies a while back and never received the order. They failed to respond to several emails. Finally filed complaint with PayPal and finally got my money back. They are unreliable.

Same thing happenned to me with Fishin Freddies also last year. I can catch shad throughout the winter, but wanted some skipjack to try out. They got my money and never sent the bait. Fishin Freddies is a joke.

where can you fish for skipjack around here?
The gene pool could use a little chlorine.
