Yeah Jgill,
You can get to the Canyon Tailrace at night. Like said above there is a small electric plant, w/ what they call a pier (I call it a bulk head). And on the side opposite the plant there is a trail along the water giving you at least 1/2 mile of bank access. It's nice.

On the weekends there are tons of people. around saltgrass there isn't many tubers because they start alittle further down but there is tons of people swiming. Go early and it's not so bad, remember no fishing on Texas state property you have to be in the river are they will fine you.

Where did you find the info on texas state writing you tickets? I could find nothing on their website about not fishing on university property. I'm not disputing you but that is so dumb if true because it's public land.

Three of the five biggest striper caught in Texas were caught down river from that plant. They feed a lot on the trout that get stocked there from what I understand. Using a trout swimbait or crank would be a good choice. When they lowered the water to do maintenance on the plant there were some nice ones in there right by the wall, a ton of carp too. I have been thinking of going down there early in the morning and see what happens.

There was a study done in 2003 where stripers with an average length of 29 inches were caught during electrofishing down below a couple of the low water dams. I don't know how the drought and floods may have affecte them but I'm sure there are still some nice ones in there.

You guys are arguing apples and oranges. The river from Aquarina Springs(headwaters), through town and down to about Staples Dam is very well known for its bass fishing. Fly fishing is also popular because of the clear/moving water. There is public access all the way through town because it's a city park. Because its a city park there will be tubers/snorklers everywhere during the warm months. Go a little south of I-35 all the way to Staples Dam and you will see much less people but the fishing is still great. You will have to pay for a shuttle in this area or take care of it yourself. The put-ins and take-outs are numerous so you can divide the trip up as you wish. Pecan Park RV Camp to Martindale was always our favorite if in a canoe. If in a tube put in at Schill Crossing off CR 103 to Martindale Dam at CR 262 you will have a 1/2 day of fishing from a tube. Only need a few river miles if fishing from a tube. River all the way down at Palmetto SP is a different River. Slower and more off colored. Still has some bass but limited access. Really, if walking the bank you need to stay in the town of San Marcos.

I just moved to San Marcos a week ago and was wonder where the best area is to fish and what you can normally catch with what. I have caught a few perch and about a 9 in. largemouth but thats it. The technique I have been using is a minnow shaped lure and throwing it up stream and letting it drift down bouncing on the bottom. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if there's anyone who wants to go hit me up.
