With boat/kayak I'd fish above the Martindale dam or the staples area. Without a boat and since I live in San Marcos I would fish the river between saltgrass and 35. There is also a nice park area on cape road off 123(upstream from cape rd is now "no trespassing", downstream has a nice stretch to fish).

Yeah, I'd say San Marcos only because there is SO MUCH more bank access. W/o either kayak/wading you are very limited at Palmetto.
Good luck Rippen.

PS- If you go to San Marcos there are fresh water prawns. They are so awesome to see. Keep an eye out.

I've been in San Marcos for a few years now and am always looking for people to fish with. If anyone is interested, please let me know. Right now is my downtown from work so I have plently of time to get out on the water.
Thanks

Ill be there at the in-laws, They have a nice bass boat and pontoon boat. Great Bass,Pike and Walleye fishing there. Got a new Mojo Bass rod and wanted to test it out so ill try the San Marcos

So went out to Palmetto today and also tried to fish in Luling. I had no luck other that a few small bites in the lake at Palmetto. The flow was pretty quick today i have a feeling it was from the flood 2 weeks ago the flow has yet slowed.
So Tomorrow we are going to try by saltgrass and see what might be there.

P.S: Had a nice scare at Palmetto we are fishing on the back side of the lake and start to hear alot of rustling in the bush behind us. Then out of nowhere a 200 plus lb hog comes flying by us and jumped into the lake then about 30 secs later 8 to 10 babies went following her. Kind of an eye opener

The flow at Palmetto is at normal level. That's what I was trying to tell you.

Biggest fish I have caught out of the river was behind the baseball fields by 35. It was two summers ago in the evening, tubers going by pretty regularly. The water had been murked up a little from people walking around. I made a cast up current from a deep eddy with a weightless senko cut down a little, as soon as it drifted off the shallow bar into the deeper pool she sucked it up, a solid 7lbs. My buddy has caught a 9 right above the martindale dam, and have heard of some 10's caught around the staples area, but nothing bigger than that. Without fail you will see hawgs cruising, getting them to bite is a challenge.

I live on the river and fish it all the time. I have a few kayaks when ever someone wants to join me.

This is a little off topic but since everyone in this topic lives in the area, has anyone fished below canyon dam? I've heard there's some big strippers down there.

I never have but I would really like to. If your looking for someone to join you sometime, lets set it up. Can you get in there at night? It might be a great time to give it a shot.

I've fished down there on vacation trips before. There's a concrete landing next to the hydroelectric station that is really nice to fish from. It's really easy access.
