It really depends what kind of Catfish you are trying to target, if you are talking about Big Blue's and Flatheads, you need a good rod that can handle some abuse, I have seen the yellow Tournement Choice bring in 2 - 50 lb Blue's in 1 day, they are for real, but the proangler rods are better, I have an 8'0 Ugly-Stick Catfish rod, and I like the 7 1/2' Proanglers a lot better, it just depends on how much you want to spend and how much confidence you want in your equipment!!! As far as reels for Big Blue's there is also some options depending on how much money you want to spend, I have been buying refurbished ABU - 6000's at Southwestern Parts and Service for $45.00 each, I also have a Shakespear SKP 2000 that has been Refurbished from FFO tackle for $14.88, once again it just depends on how much you want to spend and how much confidence you want in your equipment!!! I have never used Braided line, I use 30lb mono, I am not against braid, just uneducated about it!!! http://www.proanglertackle.com/CatfishRod.htmGood Luck to Ya!!!

I have some older model Penn Sentors, along with some smaller Penn casting reels, older from the 50's, 60's, 70's, but in great shape. I am a reel nut when it comes to old collectable Penn reels. Would these types of Penns work, or are they too old? Do their reels with newer features offer any sugnificant advantages over their older reels. Thanks again! I have some Abu's (5000 - 6000) series reels and they are fine. I've come to personally like the Ugly Stick Catfish rod that was previously mentioned for 30 bucks, rigged up with a Penn no. 09 reel. You can find these Penns (or 9M reels) on Ebay for around 25-40 bucks. That's a 70 dollar combo. Best thing about the Penns, is that they are SOLID reels. They'll last a long time, if treated right. Not sure what kind of Penn's you have, but take a stab at throwing one the size of a 9 on one of those Ugly Stick Catfish rods (white rods with glow in the dark guides). The Tournament Choice rods for 12 bucks hold their own. I haven't tried the Pro Angler rods yet, but I've heard from a very trusted source that they are more than worth the price. Here's a pic of my favorite rig: Remember, it's all about personal preference. This is my main choice for a rig and I really dig it. Steven Ray

Penn Senator 113h 4/0 20 dollar eagle claw rod. I do want to upgrade my rods, just didnt have the money so when one of these gets jacked up i will buy a custome rod. I have landed some nice fish on these and landed some pretty heavy pieces of driftwood coming down the river. Cant wait to hook a 50lber on one or both of them.

I have some Penn 4/0s like your's. I bought them on ebay along with others. I try to get those that look unused for a low price; its amazing how many you can find that appear to never have been loaded, and if they have, they have had extremely good care and/or little use. I think a lot of the old red 4/0s were built in the 70's. They look great and work the same, even though they are vintage.
