How long will this "run" usually last? My father is coming in a couple of weeks and hasn't fished in ages. Will that be too late? He lives up in the panhandle in the dry country and doesn't get to fish very often.

On Somerville the run starts up early January and usually is completely over by April but the fish get more and more active as the water warms. Right now it appears to be peaking because the fish are spread out everywhere there is good spawning conditions. I'm going to fly fish it next time out just for fun.

Had to go again (Pecan park) Tuesday to try with the fly rod and really tore them up. Once I found the fish with the spinning gear I changed gear and caught several doubles on the fly.

I don't know how many were caught with the roostertail but I was catching fish for a solid three hours, with serveral good ones mixed in with the average barely legal fish. Everything was C&R just like the last four trips out to Somerville. The fish God threw in a couple of LM bass and a catfish for good measure.. I took pictures as proof.. What a day! Todays photos are in the Somerville-Pecan7mar06 folder

HL@S.........I sure have enjoyed your great info. I live on the Galveston Bay complex and come from a Guide fisherman family and giving out that kind of info on the coast will get you killed, but I think its great that you share, so others, who dont have all the scouting time can share in the multitudes of fish. I do alot of kayaking the bays down here and just in need of a spring time change. I want to catch some whites. The last time I caught whites was on the Missouri River in Arkansas and it was the best time I ever had. If anyone can give me some info....I will be headed for Somerville on Monday, March 20th. Will there still be possible action? Will a kayak be a good idea? Is there easy launching areas for the kayak, close to parking areas. I really appreciate anyones advice. God bless!

Went out to Birch Creek on Sommerville on Wed (3/8), got there around 7 am, but the fish had seemed to come in earlier that day. Saw some people come out with some nice stringers, 3 guys came out with 40 or so good crappie. The wind was killer, but i did wind up catching about 13 Crappie between 8 and 2. Pretty slow overall and i really had to work to catch those fish. I think that the wind made them shut down, cuz they said that they had been doing real good a few days prior.

Big Creek Marina is a good place to go, however the fish only bite certain times of the day. Usually between 6 and 8 in the morning and 5 to 8 in the evening. But when the turn on you will tear them up. Heard some people limited out wed morning between 6 and 7.

I will prolly try 1 or 2 more times next week to see if it gets better or worse...will post updates after i go

Good Luck to all--Tight Lines
Chris

JP,
A yak beats pounding the bank in my opinion. I'll launch mine at Birch and fish off of the point or head over to the Pecan area that HL&S mentions.

I've also launched at Big Creek and puttered along the shoreline area and the marina. Last year, late March, I did pretty well in this area.

In the summertime on the weekend, it can be pretty busy with power boats, but you'll be OK.

I wonder sometimes if I say too much but so far so good. I think most fisherman appreciate the information that helps them be successful and considering the expense of fishing in todays world I can understand why.

I can't say how much longer the whitebass will be spread out over the shallow points in the spawning mood but there is plenty of indication that it is peaking now. It gets way tougher to find the fish after the spawn is over and the fish school up and chase shad all over the lake in open water. That's when a big boat really comes in handy.
