When jig flipping do you really have to have a medium heavy rod? Why, or Why not? Does it make a certain action or something of that sort?

Thanks for any replies. thumb

No! Depends on size of jig, cover, sometimes even depth of water.

A heavy action rod,not medium heavy.its all about backbone, having a rod that's strong enough for a strong hookset,an able to rough em through heavy cover.yes it matters, especially if your a competitive angler.but you could land one on weaker rods, but you percentage will be decreased on the ones you actually get in the boat

No it doesn't. When I fish heavy grass, buck brush, lily pads I prefer a heavy 7'6", fast action rod. Thats to get a fish out of the thick stuff quick. And I usually use the same rod if I'm using a jig 3/4 oz and up. Any other time a MH rod is a very good choice. This is just my choice.

So its really based on getting the fish out of cover and into the boat. I get it. Thanks guys. Alot. grin
I think i'll buy me a rod and reel tomorrow. Fast reel and MH rod. I wont fish that hard of cover, so there isnt really a need for a Heavy. Correct?

With most Texas rigs, carolina rigs, or jig setups I would buy a heavy action rod.

Personally I think it comes down to what YOU are comfortable with. But..... with that said, having the extra backbone in a big heavy action rod can be a lifesaver.

i actually like a MH or a softer H most of the time because I FEEL it helps me put the jig in those spots a little better, gives a little more touch to what your doing.IMO

One of my favorite jig rods says Medium on it. However in heavy cover I use a Heavy action. I also have a heavy action that I use for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits.
Remember that you can have two rods exactly the same and they will be different.

Like said above it has more to do with a combonation of jig weight, type of cover and depth. A general rule I use for rod to jig weights is 1/4 to 1/2 oz jig med/hvy rod. 1/2 to 3/4 oz jig hvy rod. 1 oz and heavier jigs extra heavy rod especially fishing deep grass.

Thanks alot for the replies.
Now i understand when to use a heavy and med heavy. And i think i'll start out with just a med heavy just because its more versatile.
Again, thanks for all the help. smile

If you want to get them out of nasty cover you need one. I feel it also has better sensitivity. IMO, medium rods and below don't have quite the sensitivity of the stiffer rods when you are flipping and pitching. But more than anything it's about the horsepower to horse fish out of dock pilings, brush, reeds, wood etc...

If it feel good in your hands and it catches fish, then that's the right rod for you.
