It's a black bullhead (Ameiurus melas) and it is essentially different from the yellow bullhead (A. natalis) in that its chin barbels are black whereas the yellow's are white.

easiest way imho to tell the difference is the eyes bullheads have considerably smaller eyes or so it seems from other catfish species
 fish to live and live to fish

dont make the mistake of putting a flathead in your pond. i did this several years ago and regret it because when he runs out of bullheads to eat he will move on to the crappie, bass, perch and any thing else you try to establish. so now im trying to catch this thing so i can restock my fishing hole.

if you like catching flatheads go catch 10 or 12 along with some bluegills outta your tank there and theres your bait for the night put out 2 or 3 of each in a good flatty hole and youll yank em out!

10 or 12 of the mud cats that is.. you know 6 to 10 inches is prime
