When i was 8 my dad taught me how to use on in the front yard. he would set up a bucket in the driveway and tell me to cast to it. when i backlashed i had to fix it myself. i learned real quick. they are not that hard if you spend a little time on it. I taught my wife last year and now she loves them.

Go straight to the low profile reel, have him set it to where you don't have backlash worries.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know when to go fishing.

They make open faces that are pretty much backlash proof.. My wife keeps hounding me about letting her upgrade from the zebco to an open face..Fishing and hunting is my alone time..lol..It use to be the bathroom but I found out real quick that if I set on the toilet for 30 minutes at a time my butt falls to sleep and thats no good.. Seriously it just takes practice...Get in the backyard with just a weight and just cast to something in the yard until you can do it over and over without making a birds nest..

I don't think your fishing skills will make or break you one way or the other. Just go, sit in the boat, fish a while, relax, and have fun. As long as you are willing to do that from sunrise 'til dark, he shouldn't have any complaints.

By the way, if you really do want to learn some fishing stuff in a hurry, then YouTube is your friend. You can learn how to do pretty much anything on YouTube.

A picture worth a thousand words (or more).
