Are there generally an abundance of sharks in the St. Charles Bay area around Goose Island?

Don't know about an "abundance", but yes more sharks than I would have thought. Friend of mine worked gill nets for TPWD one summer, and was surprised at the number of bull sharks taken.

i have cught blck tip shrks 27" along the bayfront at the park. do try the pier at night under the lights

This time of year if I aint mistaken the shark find the bay systems to have their pups.

The state record Bull Shark was caught in the Lydia Ann channel, so they get back there.

Mostly little ankle biter Blacktips. I once caught a 4 ft Black Tip in Copano Bay.

Honestly though, the main difference between fresh and salt water angling is that our fish (saltwater) bite back. That's what keeps it interesting. The added element of danger that's typically not associated with bassin'. There's always the off chance that your quarry might eat you.

Also when you go Sandbass or Crappie or Catfishing you pretty much just catch what you go after. In Saltwater you might catch 6 different fish on 6 different casts all in the same spot.

I would have pissed myself and screamed like a little girl if i saw that bull shark in the water near me! Heck i've had nightmares since looking at the picture.....crappie sure do taste good. LOL!

I have been told not to step backwards once standing in water past your knees due to Rays coming in behind you. Is there any merit to this? If so what would be the reason for them to lay up behind you?

Yes, stingrays will come in behind you. They're coming into the mud and sand that you stirred up to get where you are. The current and waves are also stirring up sediment around your feet. They're looking for the cause of all the excitement, to determine if it's edible or not. They'll also hide themselves in the stuff you stirred up and lay on the bottom.

The Lydia Ann Channel is a pretty deep channel that connects the InterCoastal to the Bay systems between Port-A and Goose Island. It gives them direct connection with the Bays, a strong current on rising and falling tides to help them get forced back in there also. Don't forget that they have caught BIG Bull Sharks as far away from the Gulf as Missourri in the Mississippi River!!! Bulls can and do thrive in fresh and brackish water. Bulls are also one of the most aggressive sharks there is. I watched a documentary where the movei Jaws was actually based on a killing spree in a RIVER on the East Coast by a big Bull Shark and not a Great White.

I think I hooked into that fella in the pics realative a few weeks ago when we were fishin down there!!!!! Son of a gun stripped about 100 yards off the Penn 4/0 in a matter of seconds and broke me off an rock on the Jetty I had the gear to atleast tangle with him for a while just not the luck that day.................... I'm plannin on taking the 6/0 Penns back out there next trip with some 80# PP Braid and some 400# Mono leaders with 9/0 Circles!!!!! Before the summer is over I plan on landing me a 6'-0 + out there!!!!!
