I am not a big fan of Bill Dance, but if a lure maunfacturing company was to endose you for money and tackle, would you turn it down!

Its just not reality to me. I like the struggles and keep moving trying different spots etc. Like I do when I am out With all due respest, on how many thirty minute to one hour fishing shows do you really see the angler(s) struggling? As noted by others, no matter who it is, these show tapings can span over several days to make it look like they are catching fish on every cast. None of it is truly reality.

He seems like a nice guy but he reminds me of one of my teachers who kinda annoyed me. I like his show more than roland martin because bill explains what hes soing and roland martin endorsed the rocket powered fishing rod and just kinda catches a fish and doesnt tell how.

Bill Dance is a legend but I like Roland Martin too. Plus that "Great American Fisherman" tune is pretty cool. The one I can't stand to watch is Jimmy Houston. Great fisherman... but that constant laugh.  J/K

I don't think anyone is saying Bill Dance hasn't contributed greatly to the sport or that he isn't a skilled or unknowledgable angler. No disrespect intended at all.
But it's clear that in his show he's fishing a stocked private lake. Watch a few and you can start to recognize some of the trees and coves. And there's never a shot of him running with the big motor, and as someone else pointed out there's never anyone else on the lake.
Now that isn't to say you can't still learn a lot from watching the show. There's always information to pick up, whether it's info about fish behavior, certain techniques, knots, weather, color, patterns, etc. But some people just prefer to spend their time watching shows that are a little less canned and that include destinations they can actually go to themselves.

Not that I'm for or opposed to Bill Dance, here is my take being a TV guy myself. His job is to entertain us with fish catches. He's not there to prove he can compete on the tour level or anywhere else. Does he pump his sponsors? Yes he does. What would happen if he never mentioned them at all? They'd drop his tail! It cost anywhere from $500 to $8000 per week to air a TV show depending on the market and that doesn't include travel expenses, post production, paying a camera guy, etc, etc... That's right, I said per week. How do you suppose he pays for that? By plugging his sponsors and getting them the most bang for thier buck. As far as where he fishes, once again he goes where he can to catch the most fish. How many of his shows would you watch if he went out to a local D/FW lake and only caught 4 fish and said " OK, thats a show". And a final point, you can't hook a fish after it's been caught and pretend you freshly caught it. It will just lay on it's side and let you drag it in. If the fish fights at all it's a fresh catch. Even after being in the live well for a long period of time. Ask any still photographer thats tried to get pics of a fish fighting. Doesn't work too well. With all of that being said... I can't watch his shows or Shaw Grigsby's either!!!

I once read somewhere that one of the main reasons BD doesn't fish too many public lakes is because he is too recognizable and being a gentleman, people who recognize him will want to talk to him while he is trying to film his show and he spents too much time visiting with the folks and delays getting his show done. I remember back in the early 80's watching his show when he would fish public waters. He does do a saltwater version and you know that has to be fished in public water. Yeah, he hawks all those products, but so does KVD, Grigsby, and anyone else on the BASS tour that is anyone. Hey, if I was that good, I too would like to get paid to fish with any and every known goody on the market.

Only time I don't watch him is if I'm out fishing. Other than that, I watch him everytime he's on. He's really done alot for the sport.
Men are like fish...If we'd learn to keep our mouth shut, we'd stay out of trouble.
