Out of curiosity how much does a reliable mechanic(3rd party) charge to give the outboard the run through?
It is hard not to justify an expense like that when investing in something that expensive. Outboards can be very expensive if not treated properly. I say you got off pretty lucky with only an exra $grand.

Not hi-jacking but stay away from I-45 Sales as well...got burned there too with similar problems.

Normally anywhere from 1-2hrs labor depending on the boat size and if its a I/O or outboard

On deals that require traveling I would get online and search boat dealers in the area and call them up to see if you can schedule to meet him there with the boat and have it checked out if he isnt willing to do that then dont waste your time
