Actually the hum's will display in I think about 7 different colors (side and down imaging)several in regular sonar, and a plethora of screen variations (split screen's w or without info bars and blocks, I have the 798csi humbird w/navionics maps for the gps and love it !! havent gotten all the way thru the medium sized paperback BOOK on operating it yet ;0) havent quite got the knack of posting good pics either ?!?! I'll try ->My fav spot on fav lake, .. river channel comes from left then makes a hard turn to the left, .. right in the middle of the turn there is a giant boulder, in about 13/14 ft water I have this spot waypoint marked on GPS last time I was there I was just slowing down enough as I passed the boulder to begin getting better images, once youve seen and recognize an area as you do in a car driving, you don't go soooo sloooow as to seee everything in the greatest detail but rather pay attention to the differences. Like youl'd not even notice that manhole cover youve driven over 100's of times but look out for kids playing!! like the fish id!! in orange would be in smaller "cone" directly beneath and blue in wider beam further out to side. if you see lots in BLUE but can't quite pick out which side by looking at side image you just back wayy off and crawl for 30 seconds and it will become very clear where they are at, exactly. At that point if they are clustered in a school you can move cursor to the center of school and GPS mark the school and go back to exact spot! I've come to like this split screen shot "down looking in upper left, sonar in upper right, and side imag left and right in bottom half of screen!

Stretch

I would have to agree with you on the images looking the same on the unit as they do on the computer. Though the image may be bigger on the computer, the image detail seems just as good on the unit. Here are a few photos of the images on my unit. Other than the photos causing the colors to not appear as vibrant as they actually are, they still seem just as good to me. I havent had the privilege yet of seeing the HB on the water but so far I am very impressed with the Lowrance.

MAK,
Those are awesome images and show/separate the schools of bait fish hidden in the clutter of structure. That is the distinction that gives the side scan models the advantage in location and potential.

I have seen both units and can't tell any difference...Go find fish, that's the proof in the pudding...Anything else is just wasted space...And if you really think that what is seen frozen in time in a Pic vs what's on the water with glare and the elements not to mention moving then Congrats...To say it's a better unit in any regard is just trying to stir it up...I know better...

BTW, I don't keep fish that long...Not as tasty...

I am not satisfied with my down imaging shots. I have The 997 like angus56. Could you share the specific settings you used to get these images posted from RR?

Pope1,

Headed to the lake tomorrow and will write them down for you.

Most of my sensitivity is between 10- 15. You need to work with your SI Enchanced settings. Thoes pics posted were using the 455 kHz and not the 800 kHz.

Pope1,

To find your SI Enchanced settings do the following
Have SI screen displayed on unit
Press Menu Once
Arrow down to SI Enchances settings
Use the following
Sensitivity set to 11
Contrast set to 10
Sharpness set to mendium

Use this as a starting point. I also need to see 2 picture of your tranducer mounted. One shot from the back and one from the side.
Good Luck.
