I have to admit that I've heard about the sunny skies = good topwater bite myth... and I've never been able to make it work for me. I've tried different things but... Zell Rowland once said you've got to fish 'em really, really slowly (not talking about frogs) and just leave 'em around ambush points and the fish'll come up and get 'em... but I don't know... I like to fish them fast and maybe that's why I only get on really good topwater bites when we've got the typical topwater conditions in place - cloudy, overcast, rainy, early/late in the day... Really wish I'd figure out what it is I really gotta do (or find the patience to slow down enough to get on a sunny sky topwater pattern!!!).

I've found in throwing the Rojas Jr. Frogs the best days are when it is warm, sunny and windy. On cold or cool days with clouds the fish just slap at it, but when it is hot and those big mama's want to get up in that shade.......That is when it is fun!!!

I've caught fish on Buzzbaits in the middle of the day without a cloud in the sky. Not just occasionally, but a LOT. The buzzbait is my #1 search bait.
Frogs work around vegetation ANYTIME. The time of day doesn't matter. These fish are comfortable, secure, and in the shade. They don't care what time it is, when a frog goes by they hammer it.

I am looking forward to the summer on Fork. We had a topwater bite all day last summer all the way into August. It got a little slower in August. In June and July no less than 50 a day. Nice unders and a few slots.

Ok surely you guys are at least talking about fishing over vegetation! Not argueing just trying to learn. I have caught lots of TW fish on Caddo mid day on the shady side of trees.

know of a local "pro" who often catches his anchor fish in the heat of the day on either a buzzbait or a bull ribbet...

I agree with EASTTEXASBASSIN on the buzzbait being a great search bait. Seems to be very versatile. Hows the top-water bite been on Ray Hubbard lately?

Question: can that apply to a lake that doesn't have a lot of vegetation anymore (Ray Roberts)? Still trying to figure out old Ray Bob. I can believe it on a lake like Fork with all the Lily Pads, Grass, and Shade. But What About Bob??

Why not fish something you can fish like a rattle trap or a Top Water bait. I caught my personal best( 11.8 lbs )on Ray Roberts using a Man's -1.(the large size in Baby Bass color) But it was late afternoon and very cloady. The fish hit it on top while the lure was still. This is a good search bait and Big bass lure, and a good top water bait, with few misses!!

topwater can definately be good all day, even with high pressure and no clouds, sometimes u just gotta change things up, sometimes when its sunny they want a white spro frog and sometimes a black, u gotta just see what they want, but i have caught some awesome topwater fish right behind people before in the middle of the day.. If ur not catching anything flippin or whatever, u might as well throw topwater because at least its fun lol

Of course you can catch a topwater fish under just about any conditions, but as a rule they work better early, late and under heavy cloud cover. You can catch them on blue bird days too, but its certinly not ideal conditions. I agree with JCB on this one with one caveat: Heavy grass acts like cloud cover and so I'll throw a spro frog, or buzzbait around milfoil mats for some awesome action all through the day!
